Our team was honoured to present at the Exxaro Resources Supervisors Indaba, where we explored the vital connection between Psychological Safety and Workplace Safety.

Ilze Swanepoel led thought-provoking sessions that underscored how fostering a culture of trust and openness is not just about enhancing team dynamics, it’s a critical element of physical safety in the mining industry.

The Indaba provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with industry experts and the Exxaro team, exchanging insights on how psychological safety can reduce risks and drive operational excellence. We’re proud to contribute to conversations that prioritise both mental and physical well-being as fundamental pillars of a safe and productive workplace.

We look forward to continuing our work in this area and supporting the mining industry in building safer, more resilient teams.

Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

Think of it like a big, lively dinner party, everyone brings something unique to the table, and the magic happens when we appreciate each dish’s flavour and contribution.

Navigating this gathering means understanding who’s around the table, valuing each person’s unique contribution, and mixing it all together for a feast of ideas and perspectives.

As we step into September, a month dedicated to celebrating Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, consider these key questions:

Key Points to Reflect On:

1. How can dialogue help uncover and address unconscious biases within teams?
2. What impact does active listening have on fostering an inclusive workplace?
3. How can leaders create safe spaces for open conversations about diversity and belonging?

Dialogue plays a crucial role in embedding these values within the workplace. In a recent webinar, Dr. Khosi Jiyane delves into how effective dialogue can bridge differences and strengthen DEI&B across your team.

The health of a relationship, team, or organisation is directly tied to the time it takes between identifying and discussing problems. ⏳

It’s in this lag time that people sense whether they’re safely connected, trust that honest and open information is shared, and understand how to move forward. 🤝

If you find yourself stuck, it’s likely because you’re not having the right conversation—or not having the conversation at all.

In the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) and BANI (brittle, anxious, non-linear, incomprehensible) world we’re all living in, everyone’s voice is necessary and mission critical. 🌍

When facing difficulties and crucial moments, reverse your thinking. Don’t focus on the risks of speaking up—think about the risks of not speaking up.

If you don’t talk it out, you’ll act it out, ultimately impacting the results and relationships you care about most.

From boosting productivity and fostering collaboration, to inspiring dedication and reducing employee burnout, the advantages of having women in leadership are clear. 📈

Women bring invaluable skills to the table—ranging from professionalism and teamwork to supportive management and effective problem-solving.

👉 When women leverage these capabilities in leadership roles, they drive both cultural and business success.

By seamlessly blending and advancing both soft and hard skills, female leaders not only innovate but also ensure sustainable growth for their organisations.

P.S. Tag a woman you admire on your team so they can see this. 🤝

The challenges women face in the workplace are real, and for the past 28 years, The Human Edge’s mission has been to eradicate the 'undiscussables.'

Unvoiced concerns often turn into resentment, bitterness, and disengagement. By having open, honest, and direct conversations in the most respectful manner, we can tackle these microaggressions and workplace challenges. 🤝

The quality of your life, happiness, and well-being depends on the quality of your conversations.

The problem isn't that we have problems; it's that most people don't know how to talk about them. 💡It's natural for both men and women to avoid difficult conversations.

⤷ Many individuals resort to silence, coercion, or even verbal violence to force others to accept their views.

Often, women choose not to address these issues due to fear of how they will be perceived or the potential risk to their relationships, fearing victimisation for speaking up.

⛓️‍💥 This highlights a lack of psychological safety within teams.

As Harvard Business School Professor Amy Edmondson, who coined the term, states: “Psychological safety makes it possible to give tough feedback and have difficult conversations without the need to tiptoe around the truth. It’s about candour, about making it possible for productive disagreement and free exchange of ideas.”

If we want people to fully show up, speak up, and own up, we must be vigilant about creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard.
