At The Karate School, we practice traditional karate as was originally intended. We focus on individual health, fitness and mental self-improvement of people of all ages.

Our technical focus is on the practical defensive combat value of karate that is so important in the modern world in which violence is an epidemic.

We align ourselves with the new wave in Shotokan karate, which has a very strong focus on analysing and teaching combat applications from the kata which are the source code of our art.

We do not specifically promote participation in competition/medal karate, not only because the founders of karate advised against it, but because karate's entire concept and philosophy cannot properly be demonstrated or used in a game.

Train your brain to score points in a game at your own risk. We don't do that at the Karate School.

At the Karate School, we focus on traditional Shotokan Karate.

We focus on practical application of the full variety of techniques that a karateka might use in a defensive scenario.

We choose to be part of the new wave in Shotokan karate that analyses kata for the practical combat applications that they provide, and not merely the aesthetic appeal of kata as performance art.

We believe that although competitive karate may in some cases be a passtime, that karate was not designed or meant for this purpose. To place emphasis on karate that wins medals detracts from the karate that allows the management of bullies an others who mean to harm the karateka.

We believe that we live in a world where the ability to apply effective karate is important to new and experienced students alike.

We believe that regular practice of karate in class builds a better, stronger, more valuable member of society.

We believe that gradings are part of the evaluation and teaching process, and therefore we only request a minimal administration fee (not a pricey grading fee) that covers the cost of convening panels and providing certificates to successful candidates. We do not believe in or charge fees for double gradings.

We welcome all to apply for membership.
