Our senior instructors and dojo head recently came together for a focused JKS SA instructors session under the guidance of Kobus Sensei. The training placed strong emphasis on technical refinement and a deeper understanding of Junro San-dan, Junro Yon-dan, and Junro Go-dan, ensuring continued alignment with the evolving JKS standard.
Moments like these are essential, not only for sharpening technique, but for strengthening the foundation of what we pass on to our students every day.
We appreciate the commitment shown by all who attended and continue to raise the level of karate across South Africa.

In karate, progression is exciting.
New belts.
New kata.
More advanced combinations.
Greater intensity.
But somewhere along the journey, something subtle happens, we begin to move further away from the basics that built us.
And that is where problems start.
Many karateka believe that advancement means complexity.
More techniques. Faster combinations. Flashier movement.
A strong gyaku-zuki is still a gyaku-zuki.
A solid mae-geri is still a mae-geri.
The difference is in structure. Timing. Intent. Efficiency.
The higher you go, the more honest the basics become.
At white belt, basics are about coordination.
At brown and black belt, basics are about mastery.
- Is your hip truly driving the technique?
- Is your stance alive or just positioned?
- Is your hikite connected or decorative?
- Is your kime structural or forced?
When we return to basics with maturity, we see what we missed the first time.
And that is humbling.
Back to basics is not a step back it is a step deeper.
When we slow down and rebuild:
- Our power improves.
- Our balance stabilises.
- Our reaction sharpens.
- Our confidence grows.
Most importantly, our karate becomes honest.
Instructors often say, โTrain basics.โ
What they mean is: remove the ego, remove the rush, remove the distraction, and build something real.
At Sakura Kai, going back to basics is not punishment.
It is culture.
We believe that:
- Strong hips create strong technique.
- Strong stance creates strong spirit.
- Strong fundamentals create strong leaders.
The seniors who return from seminars often say the same thing:
The highest level instructors still emphasise the simplest techniques.
Not because they lack material.
But because they understand what truly matters.
If your karate feels stuckโฆ
If your power feels inconsistentโฆ
If your progress feels slowโฆ
Go back.
Refine your zenkutsu-dachi.
Rebuild your oi-zuki.
Reconnect your breath to your movement.
The basics are not beneath you.
They are the foundation that will carry you further than anything else.

This past weekend, our senior students had the privilege of attending the JKS National Seminar and Instructors Course, and what an exceptional experience it was.
Training under the guidance of the Shihankai is always something special. The depth of knowledge, precision in detail, and years of experience shared on the tatami were truly world-class. Every correction carried meaning. Every explanation added another layer of understanding. This is the kind of learning that reshapes your karate from the inside out.
From technical refinement in kihon and kata to deeper insights into application, timing, structure, and teaching methodology, the standard was outstanding. It was not just about doing moreโฆ it was about understanding more.
We are incredibly proud of our seniors for investing in their growth, not only as karateka, but as future leaders and instructors within Sakura Kai. Experiences like this elevate our entire dojo.
A sincere thank you to the Shihankai and organisers for an unforgettable seminar. The level of expertise and commitment to preserving the standard of JKS karate is inspiring.
Back to the dojo, sharper, stronger, and more focused.

I spent a quick minute reflecting on the training and what it means to me while finishing a cup of coffee this morning.
In that small pause, something became clear: consistency is the name of the game.
In life and in karate, nothing lasting is built on motivation alone, it is built by rocking up, over and over again.
Showing up when itโs early. Showing up when itโs tough. Showing up when it would be easier not to, because excuses are always available, and they can quickly become your closest (best) friend if you allow them.
Each of us will see the badge differently, and that is exactly how it should be. For me, the ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ฒ represents more than just the breaking of the morning. I see Jesus in that light as a reminder to keep our eyes lifted and our direction clear.
The ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ง๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ speaks of new beginnings and intentional starts.
Every morning gives us another opportunity to align ourselves with purpose.
The ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง๐ฌ remind me that growth requires effort.
Progress comes from climbing, not avoiding. Strength is developed step by step, through steady commitment.
The original meaning of Daybreakers, early morning teammates committed to training, carries real weight.
There is something powerful about choosing discipline before the day begins. Training together at that hour sharpens us. It energises us. It sets the tone for everything that follows.
Then there is 0-10-0. Give everything. Commit fully. But pause. Reflect. Look around. And when I pause, I see a strong group of people, not just talented, but consistent. A team built on repetition, discipline, and shared purpose.
Thank you to Jan Sensei and Shiraaz Sensei for your leadership, your time, and your example. Your consistency sets the standard.
I see Daybreakers continuing to grow and standing strong well into the future. Being part of this journey is something we value deeply.

Champions arenโt made by accident, theyโre built through focused, intentional training.
Our extra Saturday Competition Class is designed specifically to sharpen students who want to step onto the competition tatami with confidence and control. This is where technique becomes precise, timing becomes sharper, and mindset becomes stronger.
Under the guidance of our dedicated competition coach, Shiraaz Sensei, students work on:
โ Competition-ready kata performance
โ Explosive speed and clean ex*****on
โ Tactical kumite awareness
โ Distance, timing, and ring control
โ Confidence under pressure
โ Competition rules and scoring strategy
This class goes beyond regular syllabus training. It focuses on the fine details that make the difference between participating and placing. From sharper transitions in kata to smarter decision-making in kumite, every session is structured to prepare students for the demands of tournament karate.
If youโre serious about competing, improving performance, and stepping onto the mat prepared, Saturday is where the work happens.

Karate does not begin with a punch.
It begins with a breath.
Before we move, we learn to pause. Before we strike, we learn to see. And in that moment of stillness, when we really look around us, we start to notice something important: there are people around us who need a kiai in their lives, a voice, a lift, a reminder that they are not alone.
That is where Martial Heart is born.
In karate we start with kihon, the basics. Stance. Balance. Breath. Discipline. Without strong basics, nothing else stands. In the same way, people also need strong basics: food, dignity, safety, and care. Small things make a big difference when they become the foundation of a life.
Then comes kata, the art in motion. Kata is how we express who we are through our training. In Martial Heart, this is where we show our humanity. We show love. We show compassion. We show what it means to be human by giving, sharing, and standing together.
And then there is kumite, the fight. Not to destroy, but to protect. To stand up. To defend those who cannot defend themselves. Martial Heart is our way of stepping into that fight for others, to protect, to support, and to refuse to look away when someone is in need.
Just like in karate, we start small, like the first belt, and grow step by step. From beginner to black belt, from one act of kindness to many. One day, we can become one strong unit, one big dojo, spreading goodness, love, care, and hope far beyond the mat.
Karate teaches us discipline, focus, respect, and teamwork. It teaches us to watch out for each other, to move as one, and to never leave someone behind. Martial Heart is simply karate off the mat, the same spirit, the same heart, now used to change lives.
Through our Martial Heart program, the dojo hosts extra weekend training sessions where the entry fee is a donation of non-perishable food items and other essential goods. These donations are then given to less advantaged individuals and families in our community. In this way, our students train not only their bodies and minds, but also their hearts, turning every class into an opportunity to give back.
Because true strength is not how hard you hit.
It is how deeply you care.
