Liverpool are determined to deliver a ‘big performance’ by way of a response when they host Crystal Palace, insists Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds’ Europa League ambitions took a serious dent on Thursday night as Atalanta claimed a 3-0 Anfield win in the first leg of the sides’ quarter-final.

Attention must quickly revert to the race for the Premier League title, and Jürgen Klopp’s men want three points at Palace’s expense in a 2pm BST meeting on Sunday.

On the need for a strong reaction, Mac Allister told Liverpool fc. com: “Yes, of course. That’s what we want. What I don’t want is us to overreact or overthink about this game, it’s something that happened just once and we have to keep going.

“We are the same players, the same team, the same club, with the same fans.”

Reflecting on the mood among the squad in the aftermath of the defeat by Atalanta, the No.10 said: “There was not much to say – I think we all feel the same.

“It didn’t feel good during the game and it didn’t feel good afterwards. It’s as simple as that. We couldn’t do what we wanted, what we know. It’s credit to them as well, they did a very good game.

“But now we have to react, we have an important game on Sunday against Crystal Palace. We will go there and try to win the game.”

When Liverpool travelled to Palace earlier in the season, they had to come from a goal down to grab a 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park, with Harvey Elliott providing a 91st-minute winner.

The Eagles have since changed managers, with Oliver Glasner installed following the departure of Roy Hodgson in February.

“We all know how good they are,” Mac Allister added of Sunday’s opponents. “I played for Brighton, and Crystal Palace against Brighton is definitely a big game. So I know how tough they are.

“They have a new and good manager and they are doing well, so it’s going to definitely be a challenge for us. But I think if we are in a good day, we can win the game.”

MATCH REPORT: Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah strike as Liverpool come from behind to beat Brighton at Anfield.

Liverpool came from behind to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at Anfield and maintain their pursuit of the Premier League title.

Mohamed Salah’s Kop-end finish midway through the second half settled Sunday’s game in the Reds’ favour, after Luis Diaz had equalised Danny Welbeck’s second-minute opener.

Jürgen Klopp’s side could have been further ahead to relieve themselves of the tense finish that developed, but they stood firm amid a spell of late Brighton pressure to ensure they returned from the international break with a vital victory in front of a new record league attendance of 60,061.

Team news

Conor Bradley came into the starting XI in place of Andy Robertson in Liverpool’s sole change from their last outing at Old Trafford.

Liverpool: Kelleher, Gomez, Endo, Van Dijk, Diaz (Gakpo, 89), Szoboszlai (Gravenberch, 90+4), Nunez (Elliott, 83), Mac Allister, Salah, Quansah, Bradley.

Unused subs: Adrian, Konate, Tsimikas, Clark, McConnell, Danns.

First half

Welbeck’s finish – the forward crisply drove in the loose ball from just inside the area following a breakaway down the left flank – put Brighton ahead before the game had settled into any kind of rhythm.

Liverpool reacted well, although they lacked a cutting edge and visiting goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was not required to make a save during a flurry of off-target attempts.

Salah sent a trademark curler just wide of the top corner before miscuing a volley from a lovely, clipped pass by Alexis Mac Allister, who had just seen a shot of his own clear the crossbar.

Salah then toe-poked wide after Bradley had strode forward from right-back but the Reds were not behind for much longer.

Brighton could only partially clear a corner and Salah won a header on the edge of the box, with Diaz reading the situation perfectly to profit from a deflection off a defender and hook home on the volley.
