PRESS RELEASE: TSHWANE EVENTS CENTRE MANAGEMENT EXPRESSES GRAVE CONCERN OVER STAMPEDE THAT INJURED 40 CHURCHGOERS

The management of Tshwane Events Centre says it is with grave concern and worry that they have learnt of the unfortunate incident where 40 churchgoers were injured during a church function held at the Centre on Sunday October 11th.
‘This is a very rare occurrence in the venue’s 50 year existence, high-volume events such as the Pretoria Show having been hosted for many years without such incident,’ says Wim du Toit, Tshwabac CEO.
The incident apparently occurred when the church’s marshals opened the gate and some of the people at the front of the throng of church visitors lost their footing, and the enthusiastic crowd continued to push forward, causing injuries to those at the front.
Thanks to the quick action of the Centre’s safety officer, the Centre’s on-site medical team were timely summoned, and medical assistance was immediately administered to the injured and further injuries prevented.
Du Toit says management has engaged with the church and the applicable health and safety authorities to prevent a recurrence.
‘We wish the injured a speedy recovery,’ he said.
