BLUE BULLS RUGBY WEEKEND ROUND-UP

What a weekend it has been for Blue Bulls Rugby!

The Vodacom Bulls continued their impressive run of form with a seventh consecutive victory, making it 10 wins from their last 11 matches. The 45-14 victory over Munster once again highlighted the quality within the squad as the Bulls now turn their attention to a massive United Rugby Championship semi-final against Glasgow at Murrayfield.

Following the match, Munster head coach Clayton McMillan reportedly singled out a Bulls player for special praise, describing the performance as one of the most extraordinary he has witnessed from an opponent. The Bulls have certainly found their rhythm at the perfect time of the season, with both the team and several individuals hitting peak form heading into the business end of the competition.

In the Carlton League, supporters were treated to what many regarded as the biggest club fixture of the season. Two national champions went head-to-head at Tuks, with Naka Bulle emerging victorious in a thrilling encounter, defeating Tuks 38-33. Elsewhere, Centurion secured an entertaining 55-40 victory over Grizzlies.

Exciting news is also on the horizon, with a major new sponsor set to be announced for the Carlton League in the coming weeks.

The future of Blue Bulls Rugby continues to look bright as the Vodacom Bulls U20 side delivered an impressive 38-12 victory over the Zimbabwe Sables senior team in a training match. The reigning SA U19 champions showcased their talent and potential against experienced international opposition.

Zimbabwe will be aiming to strengthen their squad ahead of next year’s Rugby World Cup by securing the availability of eligible professional players currently playing both in South Africa and abroad.

Montana se eerste span weet weer hoe dit voel om te wen nadat hy Saterdag met Oos-Moot in die Pretoria-derby afgereken het en daarmee sy eerste sege in die Plaatafdeling van die Virseker-Noordvaalreeks behaal het.

Die Monties se Wit Bulle was met 47-29 baas.

Baie geluk aan al die spelers en afrigters met uitstekende vertonings. Hierdie wedstryde vorm deel van die voortgesette ontwikkelingsproses en talentidentifisering binne die Blou Bulle-rugbystrukture.

ZWARRIES SLAAG REUSE-TOETS
Klop Kempton in Noordvaalplaat-riller

Die eerste span van die Hoërskool Zwartkop het gisteraand 'n reuse-karaktertoets geslaag toe hy HS Kempton Park naelskraap in 'n sleutelwedstryd in die Virseker-Noordvaalreeks se Plaatafdeling geklop het.

Die impak van hierdie oorwinning is beduidend deurdat Zwartkop [3 wedstryde] al hoe nader aan die tweede plek op die punteleer gevorder het, wat op die oomblik nog deur Kempton [5 wedstryde] beklee word. Dit was slegs Kempton se tweede nederlaag in vyf wedstryde.

Zwarries was met 22-21 baas, 'n oorwinning waarmee hulle hul lidmaatskap van ‘n baie eksklusiewe klub behou het. Net Zwarries en die liga-voorloper, Nelspruit [4 wedstryde], is nog onoorwonne.

⚔️ ‘CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS’ AT TUKS STADIUM
🏆 Unofficial crowning of the best club in South Africa

One of the most intriguing facets of the Carlton Cup Competition — which would have marked its 88th anniversary this year were it not for the Covid pandemic — lies in its paradoxical power: a pool match can, at times, decide which BBRU club reigns supreme across South Africa at every level of the game, albeit unofficially.

That is why the first‑round showdown between log leaders UP‑Tuks and second‑placed Naka Bulle has been the talk of the town. Supporters have already upgraded it to the Clash of the Champions — and with good reason.

UP‑Tuks, hosts of this much‑anticipated fixture, return to Tuks Stadium for the first time since lifting the biggest prize in tertiary rugby — the 2026 Varsity Cup, where they beat NWU‑Eagles in the final to become the first institution to claim the title a record sixth time.

On Saturday, they face the mighty men from the Moot — their nemesis since the post‑Covid era.

However, Naka started turning the tables in 2017 when they beat UP‑Tuks twice in the same season (34–10 and 22–18). Since that historic season, Naka has beaten UP‑Tuks six more times, with the biggest margin coming in the 2023 semi‑final (48–15). In 2021, the teams drew 28–28 in the first round.

The last time UP‑Tuks beat Naka was in 2024 (54–42) — a result Naka will be wise to remember. The sailing is not always smooth against UP‑Tuks.

Even so, the statistics favour Naka, as they have the silverware to show. They are the triple Carlton Cup and Gold Cup champions — proof of their consistency, talent, and established winning culture.

But Centurion proved that Naka is not an unshakable unit when the 2025 bronze medallist beat the defending champions in their Carlton Cup opener (34–33).

Dewey Swartbooi, UP‑Tuks head coach, conceded that they face a formidable opponent that has very few off days. Naka will come at UP‑Tuks with everything they have, which leaves the latter with only one choice: UP‑Tuks will also have to bring their A‑game — the same one that proved lethal against Harlequins.

🏉 CENTURION
Centurion, unbeaten after two matches, will host the beleaguered Grizzlies, winless after three matches. The pressure on last year’s runners‑up is such that they can go into the match with a do‑or‑die attitude — and that is what makes them dangerous and unpredictable, because they can afford the luxury of playing high‑risk rugby.

Centurion might be tempted to see Grizzlies as easy prey — but the chances of that happening are slim at best. The home side will rather focus on building further momentum.
