I once heard someone say they do squats so they can still get on and off the toilet independently when they are older.

That stuck with me.

Because that is what training should really be about.

Not just six packs.
Not just shrinking yourself.
Not just chasing a “summer body”.

It should help you live your life better.

You should train so you can:

✔ Climb stairs without getting out of breath
✔ Pick up your grandchildren one day

If you want a stronger core, you don’t need fancy equipment.
You need the right exercises, done properly.

Here are 3 of my go-to core movements:

1️⃣ Dead Bug
This one looks simple, but it works if you slow it down.
Control every rep, keep your lower back pressed into the floor, and focus on stability.

2️⃣ Oblique V-Up
More advanced, so don’t rush into it.
Great for targeting your obliques and building strength through your sides.

3️⃣ Pallof Press
One of the best for core stability.
It teaches your body to resist rotation, which is key for protecting your spine and improving overall strength.

Your core is not just about abs.
It is about stability, control, and supporting every movement you do.

Train it properly and everything else improves.

Here are 5 simple tips I recommend to every client:

💤 Get enough sleep
This is where your body recovers, repairs and resets. Aim for 7 to 8 hours where possible.

💧 Drink enough water
Hydration affects your energy, performance and recovery more than you think.

🍗 Eat enough protein
Protein supports muscle, keeps you fuller for longer and helps your body recover properly. Try include it in every meal.

🚶 Get your steps in
Daily movement matters. Walking is one of the easiest ways to improve your health and stay active.

🧠 Make time for you
Training is not just physical. It is your time to reset, focus and look after yourself.

You do not need to be perfect. You just need to be consistent.

Start with these, build momentum, and watch how everything else begins to improve.

Most people say, “I can’t do a pull up.”

That’s usually because they are trying to jump straight to step 5.

Strength is built in stages.

Here’s how we progress properly:

1️⃣ Scapular pull up with a hold
Build shoulder control and activate your back properly.

2️⃣ High hold
Develop strength at the top position where most people fail.

3️⃣ Slow negative
Control your body on the way down. This builds serious pulling strength.

4️⃣ Assisted pull up
Use bands or support to practise full range of motion with control.

5️⃣ Full pull up
Now you have earned it.

Pull ups are not about ego. They are about strength, shoulder stability, and building a capable upper body.

It is easy to look at someone else’s strength, progress or body and feel like you should be doing the same. But fitness is not a comparison game. Your body, your goals and your starting point are unique to you.

That is why I do not believe in one size fits all programmes.

The way you squat, lift, move and progress should be based on your mobility, your strength level, your injuries, your lifestyle and what you actually want to achieve. What works for someone else might not work for you and that is okay.
