๐๐ Fish Fact Monday โ Grey Spotted Guitarfish! ๐๐
Todayโs video features a fascinating grey spotted guitarfish - a bizarre-looking animal that sits somewhere between a shark and a ray! ๐
Despite its appearance, guitarfish are actually rays, although their long, streamlined bodies and shark-like tails make them look more like a shark at first glance.
Here are a few interesting facts about these unusual animals:
๐ฆ A ray that looks like a shark!
Guitarfish have the broad, flattened front half of a ray combined with the elongated body and powerful tail of a shark. They really are the best of both worlds!
๐ Built for life on the seafloor
Their underside contains sensory organs that help them detect prey hiding beneath the sand. They use their pointed snouts to search through the seabed for crabs, prawns, worms and other small animals.
โก They can โseeโ with electricity
Like sharks and other rays, guitarfish have special sensory organs called ampullae of Lorenzini. These allow them to detect the tiny electrical signals produced by other animals โ even when their prey is buried under the sand.
๐ชจ Masters of camouflage
Their grey and spotted colouring helps them blend into sandy and rocky seabeds. When resting on the bottom, they can be surprisingly difficult to spot.
๐ช A powerful tail
Unlike many rays, guitarfish have a long, muscular tail with two dorsal fins โ giving them a much more shark-like appearance. Their tails are also an important source of propulsion when swimming.
๐ฃ They give birth to live young
Guitarfish don't lay eggs. Females give birth to fully developed young, which are already equipped to hunt and survive on their own.
๐ A vulnerable group
Unfortunately, many guitarfish species are threatened by fishing pressure. Their tendency to live in shallow coastal waters makes them particularly vulnerable to being caught as bycatch.
Next time you see one of these strange-looking creatures on a dive, take a closer look โ you're not looking at a weird shark, but at one of the ocean's most fascinating rays! ๐๐
