Paul McCartney doesn’t see food — he sees a life.

Every New Year, fireworks light up the sky. They also leave a trail of harm. People end up in hospitals. Pets shake in fear and hide under beds. Birds scatter in the dark. The streets fill with smoke and broken pieces.

The Netherlands is taking a different path. Private fireworks will be phased out from New Year 2026 to 2027. Professional shows can still go on. Communities can apply for safe, supervised displays. The goal is simple. Protect lives. Protect animals. Reduce chaos.

This change did not come from nowhere. Nurses and first responders have spoken up for years. Animal groups have raised alarms about scared pets and wildlife stress. Clean-up crews start each New Year with piles of shattered debris. The ban gives them relief and gives everyone more peace.

Some people feel sad. Fireworks were a tradition. But new traditions can grow. Light shows. Music. Community moments that do not leave animals trembling or humans injured.

A kinder New Year is possible. The Netherlands is showing what that can look like.
