Our first Zekken are out!!

A Zekken is a symbol of belonging. It represents your dojo, your fellow kendoka, the Kendo values, and sometimes has a profound meaning.

Our Zekken features the daki myoga kamon, a traditional Japanese family crest. The myoga word also translates to divine protection. Therefore, it is a popular kamon among temples and various samurais clans. Choosing the myoga is an acknowledgement that opening the dojo has been a privilege and we are grateful.. The medium blue reflects the heaven.

Wear your zekken with pride, and let your actions give it meaning. 💙🌊

We had the privilege of showcasing Kendo last Saturday through an exciting demonstration at the "Fête de l'école" of the French International School in Morningside 🇲🇫🇿🇦

Despite the cold, the enthousiasm of the crowd was amazing, and our eager Kendokas gave it their all 🤩

Kendo is a dynamic Japanese martial art that involves full-contact sparring using a bamboo sword (shinai) and protective armor (bōgu) ⚔️

Developed in Japan during the 17th century, these training tools allowed swordsmen to practice safely while preserving the spirit and techniques of traditional swordsmanship. Rather than relying on brute strength, Kendoka learn precision, control, discipline, and timing. Beginners start wearing bōgu once they have developed the correct fundamentals and technique.

Today, Kendo is practiced by an estimated 6 million people worldwide. It can be enjoyed from childhood through old age, making it a truly lifelong martial art.
