Sailing Pluto

Sailing Pluto Come see how it goes. We took the plunge and bought a sailboat. Join us as we find our way around salty water and sailing adventures.

We don't know what to expect, but we are excited about it anyway (notes on Life, Nichelle) We are doing our longest passage and crossing the Atlantic Ocean in March 2020! Having always been keen on adventure, 2017 felt like the right time to give up the comforts of our house, sell all our belongings and chase the dream we have spoken about so many times. Inspired by simple living and a self-sufficient life on the water, we are moving aboard a 36 ft sailboat in July with whatever we can fit in it.

We woke up to the news that Fenton passed away this weekend while on his boat, 100m from their planned destination in French Polynesia.

I remember vividly when we first saw Pateke in Knysna.

Tied up alongside just in front of the Knysna Yacht Club it was hard to miss the small but absolutely beautiful wooden boat, brimming with character. I heard Takeko talk to Fenton as they were stepping onboard, no idea who they are or where they have come from. Not knowing that our paths will cross many times after.

They too had engine issues and stayed on in Knysna much longer than planned. We would hang out at the club many evenings, and later in the Knysna Waterfront marina. This is where I captured some of the story on film. Fenton was such a good story teller. It was a privilege to get him to share it.

We stayed in contact, caught up again some time later when we were all in Cape Town and we loved following their adventures as they made their way almost, almost all the way around.

Interesting how we feel the need to gather information about someones' passing. The what and where becomes so important for our own closure or context? And it actually really does not matter.

We had our cup of coffee on him this morning, watched the video of his boat, and got reminded again of all the wonderful stories our there and great people that we get to meet.

RIP Fenton and condolences to the family and especially Takeko Kojima Sending all our love.

4 YEAR REVIEW:

I am going through some old photos and found this! A brand new addition then, looking all sparkly clean! Years later and it was still the BEST investment ever.

Closing up the cockpit area added an extra room to our living arrangements, kept us dry on rainy days, protected us from wind, gave extra warmth in winter while still improving overall ventilation to the boat.

It gives us a space to entertain regardless of the weather. Hey, we were even able to have a boat full of friends sleep overnight and used it as an extra room :)

It does need some SERIOUS attention now, but considering it has been in the wind and sun for just over 4 years, it's done well.

Maintenance to date:

* Straps to secure the bimini roof to the stainless steel frame - got frayed and was replaced in Knysna, 2018 and again in Saldanha, 2020 (they take a beating!)
* Zips to connect the bimini and side covers - replaced Cape Town, 2022

We will most likely improve the design a little and consider a hard top for the next one, but the concept and design was spot on and highly recommended.
