Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo

Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo Who would have thought there'd be trophy sized trout in the Karoo, as well as 6 other fish species to catch! The water quality produces trout over ten pounds.

The perception is there is no water in the Karoo, let alone trout!

South Africa is celebrating Heritage Day today. In true form, most of the country will do that in front of a fire. A nice lamb chop or piece of boerewors sizzling, the only thing better than that, is to do it next to a fly fishing water!

You wouldn't think that this water was down to a w**dy puddle last year. We've had such incredible rains in the last couple of months that it is back to full, the w**d has died down a bit and the new stockies are thriving. One of these days they'll be trophy sized again, but in the mean time, these Karoo trout surprise every fisherman with their sheer strength! You have to be tough to survive in the Karoo ๐Ÿ˜†

When was the last time you picked up a rock in a stream to see what is hiding under there? As fly fishermen we tend to focus on our go-to fly, and forget to look around and match what is actually going on in the water. Fish your favourite by all means, but think out of the box sometimes, and try something a little different!

Alan's variation of GRHE using the latest fly tying materials. He's playing around with Senyo's laser hair and is really happy with the results.

The laser hair is offering a synthetic alternative to soft hackle; being so fine it has wonderful movement allowing this to be a generic immitation to emergers and snails coming up to the surface to get oxygen and then dropping down again to it's desired water column.

The Laser Nymph is available in a weighted and unweighted version.

We've shared a few pics of small fish, and we think perhaps people mistakenly think that is all we catch, so we thought we'd set the record straight! We love seeing all the different year classes coming to the net, but it's really special getting the bigger trout too!

This little guy is 9 now, and can't wait to visit Grampa again, so that he can help make stock of his crab flies again. He's quite good at it, so he'll be taught a different fly too. Sorry dad, this may become an expensive hobby!
