Leaders in Conversation (12): Post Traumatic Growth

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, Crispin Swart (host) is joined by Rory van der Merwe (speaker), who talks about leadership trauma - the impact on the leaders, as well as everyone the leader influences.

Quote:
SOME OF US ARE CREATING,
WHILST SOME OF US ARE WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN

Nugget of Wisdom:
Trauma: It’s not just the event: It’s not what happens to me, It’s what happens inside me because of the event.
Hope: We can proactively grab Hope. Hope is free! Hope is teachable. Hope is measurable. Hope is increaseable.

Question:
In which ways can you influence your system to shift to being hopeful, trauma-informed, and change adaptable?

Finding Your Tribe: The Loneliness of Leadership
In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, Jeanette Head (host) is joined by Elona Ndlovu (speaker), as they unpack leadership loneliness, and the causes, and effects thereof. This is followed by exploring how one finds and builds your tribe.

Quote:
I can be alone but not lonely
Learn to live with yourself!

Nugget of Wisdom:
Resist BUSYNESS to camouflage your uneasiness about loneliness. Be still, pause, reflect.
You are the first member of your tribe. You cannot connect with others if you are not connected to self.

Questions:
Be honest about your level of loneliness.
Am I feeling lonely? What is causing the loneliness?
How am I showing up as a result of my loneliness?

SHATTERING THE OLD NARRATIVE
Co-creating a New Story for Women in Leadership
A "Zebracorn" is a woman leader who shatters her own self-imposed glass ceiling to be uniquely and authentically different, crafting her own story despite her circumstances - Boundless Leadership.

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, host Jeanette Head is joined by a powerful duo, Candice Hankey (guest speaker) and Samkelo Blom (co-host), who ask us to reflect on whether we are beating the same old drum, challenge us to shatter the old narrative, and propose a new perspective on women in leadership.

One Quote:
"Can the true leaders, not just the women leaders, please stand up!"

One Nugget of Wisdom:
You are your BENCHMARK. If you make others your benchmark you continue to seek their approval and strive to fit into their world.

One Question:
Are the organisational systemic challenges regarding women in leadership consuming your attention and taking focus away from the impact you could have as a leader?

Leaders in Conversation Revisited (7): Leading in the New Normal

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, host Crispin Swart is joined by executive coach Colin Koen as they discuss navigating a complex leadership landscape where there is no "new normal", and change is the only constant.

One Quote:
"I don’t believe that there will ever be a new normal, there is only a new different."

One Nugget of Wisdom:
Leaders are challenged to unlearn much of what they have learned in the past. Consciously give up knowing - choose to give up knowing everything all the time!

One Question:
"How are you leading in the new normal/ new different?"

Leaders in Conversation Revisited (6)

Multi-Dimensional Leadership: Leading Diverse Teams in Complex Contexts

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, host Crispin Swart is joined by Michele Kruse, a globally seasoned leader. Michele talks about how leaders can navigate leading diverse teams in complex contexts, and how to thrive as a leader in a complex workplace.

YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HobDTK8ziAc

One quote:
"The reality is that when you are leading a team and have all the answers, you don’t need the team and the leader! You don’t need two groups of people all knowing the same thing."

One Nugget of Wisdom:
When teams have role clarity, the leader is conscious of their behaviours and the impact on the team, enablers are in place, it gives space for the shared belief that we are safe and we can ask for help. This shifts focus from our differences to our shared purpose.

One Question:
"What does being a multidimensional leader look like for you?"

Leaders in Conversation Revisited (5)

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, host Crispin Swart is joined by executive coach Colin Koen who shares valuable lessons on navigating leadership burnout which he gleaned from the experience of sailing the South Pacific Ocean.

YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6N270ovSkA

One Quote:
“Don’t believe that there will ever be a new normal, there is only a new different"

One Nugget of Wisdom:
Leadership burnout is the feeling of emotional and physical exhaustion that comes from neglecting wellness. We generally have an inability to intentionally engage on the topic of burnout and wellness, as it is often stigmatised.

One Question:
How clear are you on your purpose and what “excess baggage” are you carrying around with you that may be weighing you down and holding you back?

Leaders in Conversation Revisited (4): Leverage your BOUNCEBACKABILITY and unlock the power of storytelling

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, guest speaker Adeliah Jacobs talks about bouncebackability, how to cultivate leadership resilience using the stories we tell ourselves, and more.

BOUNCEBACKABILITY is being aware of what is going on right now, yet knowing that there is something beyond the current reality

One Quote:
"Trust that where you are, and what you are doing is meant to be"

One Nugget of Wisdom:
When you are faced with discomfort, you can move forward, you can move backward, sideways or you can stay where you are. This is the power of choice.

One Question:
Recall a time when you were resilient and bounced back. What worked for you then? What did you learn from that experience? How can you use this learning in your current situation?

Leaders in Conversation Revisited (3): Reinventing Leadership and 3 ways to grow impactful leaders.

In this session, globally certified Reinvention Practitioner Gary Graham, MCC, CRP joins us to discuss how we can reinvent leadership to thrive in a complex world.
Key aspects explored in this episode are whether the kind of leaders we have are still serving us, whether the way we are developing leaders is adequate, and what a future fit leadership would look like.

One Quote:
"We don't have the luxury to hit the pause button, let’s reinvent on the fly".

One Nugget of Wisdom:
Future-fit leadership requires a significant SHIFT in the way we lead. We probably have to “fix on the go”, we may not have the luxury of pausing and rebuilding and then executing, given the speed of change.

One Question:
If you had to apply some radical new thinking to your approach to leadership development, what would you do differently? How will you achieve this?

In this episode of Leaders in Conversation, Samkelo Blom talks about the difference between management and leadership, his own personal journey of becoming a leader, the transition from employee to entrepreneur and business owner, and provides useful travel tips for leaders who are on the same journey as him.

One Quote:
Leaders left me feeling empowered, managers often left me feeling fearful.

One Nugget of Wisdom:
Real leaders need to stand up in our world of OPPORTUNITIES.
There is nothing like a crisis to produce something POSITIVE.

One Question:
What have your role models taught you about leadership?

By the time you are reading this, we are less than 8 weeks from Christmas.

Choosing something meaningful on a tight budget is also proving challenging!
This got me thinking about what that ideal gift would be……

It would have to be Hope. Hope that the anger, hatred and conflict in the world will end. Hope that we can turn around all the challenges of our beautiful nation. Hope that our private and public sector institutions will be led by women and men of integrity, trustworthiness and purpose!

As we race towards the end of the year, this may be a good time to press the pause button and reflect on how we can be leaders who are catalysts and stewards of Hope in our organisations, teams and families.

Hope that each and everyone of us who call ourselves leaders, would rise to the calling to fully step into our leadership, to be the best versions of ourselves, and to be stewards of Hope.

Please join our Leaders in Conversation webinar with our special guest Rory vd Merwe on 2 November 2023 at 19:00 (SATS) when Rory will share his journey of personal transformation and growth as a steward of Hope impacting hundreds of leaders across the world.
