If you’re booking a South African hunt at DSC / SCI / GAOS…
Screenshot this list. Save it. Use it.
Because the right outfitter will answer these fast… and the wrong one will start sweating.
✅ QUESTIONS TO ASK EVERY OUTFITTER:
Where exactly do you hunt? (province + region, not just “South Africa”)
Is it one property or multiple?
Do you own the land or is it leased concession?
How big is the area?
How do you move between areas?
Will we have to drive to different areas to hunt different species?
What’s the daily schedule?
Walk-and-stalk or blind?
How many hunters per week?
How many PHs?
Who will be my PH?
How many rifles in camp?
What happens if we wound an animal?
What does a typical shot distance look like?
High fence or free range?
What is the terrain like and how physically demanding is it?
What trophy quality should we expect? (representative vs SCI/BC medal class)
Do you have rifle rentals? Cost of rifle + ammo, what optics?
Can I bring my own rifle and what does that process look like?
How far is camp from airport? Overnight in Joburg? Additional flight?
Observer cost?
Cell service / WiFi?
Drinks / alcohol included?
Ask for price list + realistic animal list based on what can be hunted without driving insane distances
How long in business? License number? References?
Professional affiliations (Custodians, PHASA, WRSA, SUCO-SA, etc.)
Foot & Mouth Disease question: “What’s going on with FMD and will it affect my hunt?”
🔥 Pro Tip: If you get a bunch of “it depends…” and “we’ll figure it out later”…
that’s not an answer — that’s a warning sign. Here's the tipping video, it's a must watch:
