BWF Approves New 15-Point Scoring System for 2026 Season

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially approved a new best-of-three, 15-point scoring format during its latest council meeting. The system will be implemented after formal approval at next year’s AGM, replacing the long-standing 21-point games and reshaping the pace and duration of matches.

According to BWF, the rapid increase in World Tour tournaments has significantly raised players’ workloads. The new format is designed to reduce match length, protect athletes’ physical well-being, and help manage long-term fatigue. The system was first trialed at the World Junior Championships in October as part of a testing phase.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions across the global badminton community:

Supporters believe the 15-point system will create faster, more dynamic matches.

Critics argue it may lead to higher match intensity and increased pressure on players.

Whether this becomes a groundbreaking evolution or a controversial shift will be clearer once it officially takes effect next year.
