Nobody wanted him. A nation was waiting for him🐎
Crooked legs, knobby knees, too lazy to be taken seriously. The experts had already written him off. Owners had dumped him. Prestigious stables wouldn't look twice.
His name was Seabiscuit.
He lost his first 17 races. He was sold for $8,000 to automobile dealer Charles Howard and handed to Tom Smith, an unorthodox trainer nobody took seriously. In 1938 he beat Triple Crown champion War Admiral in a legendary match race at Pimlico. He retired with a record of 89 starts, 33 wins, and over $437,000 in earnings, and was named Horse of the Year.
It was the era of the Great Depression. Millions of Americans had lost their jobs, their homes, their hope. And in that darkness, a "broken" horse started winning.
People went wild. Because Seabiscuit was them. Cast aside. Underestimated. Written off as finished.
Horses don't read newspapers. Seabiscuit didn't know he was supposed to lose.
Maybe that's exactly why he won.
