πŸ₯‹ KARATE WORD OF THE WEEK: KIHON

Every strong karateka starts with the basics.

Kihon (基本) means β€œbasics” or β€œfundamentals” β€” and forms the foundation upon which karate is built.

Punches. Kicks. Blocks. Stances. Movement.

They may be the first techniques we learn, but they are never techniques we leave behind. From white belt to black belt, karateka continue practising kihon to improve:

πŸ₯‹ Technique
⚑ Speed
πŸ’₯ Power
🎯 Accuracy
βš–οΈ Balance
🧠 Control

As we progress, the techniques don't necessarily become different β€” our understanding of them becomes deeper.

That is why even the most experienced karateka still return to the fundamentals.

There are no shortcuts to strong karate.

Repeat. Refine. Improve. πŸ₯‹

πŸ’¬ Karateka: Which basic technique do you think takes the longest to truly master?

15/09/2026

πŸ₯‹ KATA β€” MORE THAN A SEQUENCE OF MOVEMENTS

Kata brings together many of the movements we practise in kihon and gives us a structured way to work on movement, angles, striking and grappling applications β€” particularly when those movements are explored and drilled with a partner.

But kata also has value simply as training.

It can be a great physical exercise for developing:

πŸ₯‹ Mobility
βš–οΈ Balance
🎯 Coordination
🫁 Cardiovascular fitness
🧠 Focus and body awareness

Can these skills be learned and trained in other ways?

Of course.

There may even be more efficient ways to isolate and develop certain attributes. But karate isn't always about finding the fastest or most efficient training method.

If you practise karate, and you enjoy kata, then that is reason enough to train it.

And perhaps there's an even bigger question:

If you remove kata completely from your training… are you still practising karate, or simply training techniques that come from karate? πŸ₯‹

What do you think?

πŸ’¬ We'd love to hear your perspective in the comments.

πŸ₯‹ WHAT IF KARATE COULD GIVE YOUR CHILD MORE THAN JUST A SPORT?

As parents, we want our children to grow into confident, respectful and resilient young people.

Karate can help build those qualities β€” one class, one challenge and one achievement at a time.

At Vryburg Karate Centre, we use traditional JKA Shotokan Karate to help children develop:

πŸ₯‹ Confidence β€” believing in themselves
🎯 Focus β€” learning to concentrate and listen
🀝 Respect β€” for instructors, others and themselves
πŸ’ͺ Discipline β€” developing positive habits and perseverance
⚑ Fitness β€” building stronger, healthier bodies

And your child doesn't need to be athletic, confident or experienced to start.

Every karateka was once a beginner.

πŸ₯‹ Movement is a privilege. Never take it for granted.

Every kick, every stance, every kata and every training session is an opportunity to use your body, challenge your mind and become stronger than you were yesterday.

Karate teaches us to appreciate what our bodies are capable of β€” while constantly working to improve them.

Train while you can. Move with purpose. Be grateful for the journey.

πŸ₯‹ TRAINING. LEARNING. IMPROVING.

Progress in karate doesn't happen overnight.

It is built through showing up, practising the fundamentals, working with different training partners and repeating techniques until they become sharper, faster and more controlled.

Every training session is another opportunity to improve:

⚑ Speed
🎯 Timing
πŸ“ Distance
πŸ₯‹ Technique
🧠 Focus
🀝 Control

And that's what you see here β€” karateka working together, challenging one another and becoming better with every repetition.

There is always something to improve, no matter what belt you wear.

πŸ₯‹ Keep training. Keep learning. Keep growing.

πŸ₯‹ KARATE MOVE OF THE WEEK: MAE GERI!

Simple to learn. Challenging to master.

Mae Geri (ε‰θΉ΄γ‚Š) β€” the front kick β€” is one of the fundamental techniques every karateka learns, but good Mae Geri is about far more than simply kicking forward.

A strong Mae Geri requires:

🦡 Hiki-ashi β€” a fast, controlled retraction of the kicking leg
🎯 Accuracy β€” striking the intended target
⚑ Speed β€” delivering the kick without unnecessary movement
βš–οΈ Balance β€” maintaining control throughout the technique
πŸ₯‹ Good posture β€” staying strong and ready for your next movement

As karateka progress, the technique becomes faster, sharper and more powerful β€” but the fundamentals never change.

That's why we practise the basics again and again.

Strong karate is built on strong fundamentals.

πŸ’¬ Karateka: What's the hardest part of Mae Geri for you β€” balance, speed, height or bringing the leg back quickly?

πŸ‘ Like if you're working on improving your basics.

πŸ₯‹ 5 JAPANESE WORDS EVERY KARATEKA SHOULD KNOW

When you step into a traditional karate dojo, you're not only learning techniques β€” you're also becoming part of a martial art with its own language, traditions and culture.

Here are 5 Japanese words you'll hear regularly in karate:

πŸ₯‹ OSS β€” A respectful acknowledgement used throughout karate.

πŸ₯‹ SENSEI β€” A respectful title for your teacher or instructor.

πŸ₯‹ DOJO β€” More than just the place where we train; it's a place for learning, discipline and personal development.

πŸ₯‹ KATA β€” A structured sequence of techniques and movements practised in a specific pattern.

πŸ₯‹ KUMITE β€” Sparring; where karateka learn to apply timing, distance, technique and control with a partner.

Understanding the words we use helps us understand the tradition behind what we practise.

Karate isn't only about learning how to punch, kick and block. It's about respecting the art, its history and the principles that have been passed down through generations. πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ₯‹

πŸ’¬ Karateka, which Japanese karate word did YOU learn first?

πŸ‘‰ Swipe through to learn all five.

Same principles. Higher level. πŸ₯‹πŸ”₯

As a karateka progresses, the fundamentals don't disappear β€” they become sharper.

The same skills our younger and lower-grade students practise are developed further through years of consistent training.

⚑ Faster reactions
🎯 Greater accuracy
πŸ₯‹ Better technique
πŸ“ Stronger understanding of distance
πŸ’₯ More speed and power
🧠 Greater control and timing

With our blue and black belts, the pace increases, the movements become more precise, and the expectations become higher.

But the foundation remains the same.

Karate isn't about rushing to the next belt. It's about continually improving the skills you've already learned.

From beginner to black belt, we keep training, refining and growing. πŸ₯‹

πŸ’¬ Karateka: Which takes longer to master β€” speed, timing, distance or control?
