Cholera Outbreak: Nation Tracks Shifting Threat as Cases are now at 861

Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima has provided a critical update on the cholera outbreak that continues to challenge the nation, revealing a shifting pattern of transmission and ongoing response efforts.

The outbreak, first detected in Mpulungu District on 5th August 2025, has now spread to 20 districts across eight provinces. To date, the country has recorded a cumulative total of 861 cases and 16 tragic deaths. Notably, Luapula and Eastern Provinces have reported no confirmed cases.

While in Northern Province, particularly Mpulungu, remains the initial epicenter—accounting for 70% of all cases—the threat has evolved. Since November 2025, transmission has shifted southwards. Lusaka Province is now the primary focus, driving national spread through urban and peri-urban mobility and sanitation challenges.

Current Active Hotspots
Seven districts are currently battling active transmission:

· Mpulungu (experiencing a second wave)
· Lusaka
· Chilanga
· Nakonde
· Solwezi (second wave)
· Nkeyema
· Choma (a new outbreak, recently confirmed)

In the last 24 hours alone, 20 new cases were reported from four of these districts. Of particular concern is Nakonde District, which has seen a disproportionately high fatality rate, indicating vulnerabilities in early detection and community-level care.

A key pillar of the response is vaccination. In Lusaka's Chainda area, a two-dose Oral Cholera Vaccine campaign has achieved impressive reach:

· Dose 1: 99.1% coverage (35,396 of 35,700 targeted)
· Dose 2: 93.2% coverage of first-dose recipients

This effort supplements intensified surveillance, community engagement, and support for frontline health workers.

The Ministry underscores the vital importance of early symptom recognition and prompt medical care, as nine of the 16 deaths occurred in community settings. Citizens are urged to practice rigorous hygiene, ensure food and water safety, and seek immediate care if symptoms like severe diarrhea or vomiting appear.
