The reason we have so many Shotokan organizations comes down to history, leadership splits, differing philosophies, and politics. Here’s my breakdown:

1. Founder’s Death and Lack of a Single Successor

When Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan, died in 1957, he didn’t appoint a clear successor. His students many of them strong personalities with their own ideas began forming their own paths.

2. JKA Split (Japan Karate Association)

The JKA was one of the first formal organizations. After Funakoshi’s death, major figures like Masatoshi Nakayama took charge. But later, internal disputes especially after Nakayama died in 1987 led to splits within the JKA itself, forming:
• JKA (Asai group)
• JKA (Nakayama’s legacy group, currently led by Ueki Masataka)

3. Different Philosophical and Technical Directions

Some instructors emphasized kihon and kata, others focused more on kumite and competition and others wanted to preserve the traditional budo (martial way). These differences led to:
• SKIF (Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation) by Hirokazu Kanazawa
• WSKF (World Shotokan Karate-do Federation) by Hitoshi Kasuya
• ISKA, JSKA, IJKA, ITKF and many more

Each group believes it represents the truest or best evolution of Shotokan.

4. Internationalization

As Shotokan spread globally, senior instructors in other countries also formed organizations. Some were ex-JKA or SKIF and others started fresh, e.g.:
• ASKA (American Shotokan Karate Alliance)
• KWF (Karatenomichi World Federation) by Mikio Yahara
• WUKF Shotokan, etc.

5. Politics and Personal Differences

Sometimes splits had less to do with karate and more to do with ego, leadership clashes, or money unfortunately common in many martial arts styles.

So, in short:

No single Shotokan “church” emerged after Funakoshi, so his students and their students each developed their own vision of what Shotokan should be.

If you’re part of Shotokan, it’s less about which org you belong to, and more about whether your group emphasizes discipline, growth and quality karate.
