“I couldn’t have done it on my own” as Tonge secures golden gloves.
Loveness Tonge, Eagles number one and skipper secured her 19th sheet of the season as Eagles ended their campaign with a 3-0 victory over ZISD.
Eagles showed a lot of intent from the onset, they would soon get their reward in the 15th minute when Racheal Moono pounced on an error from the ZISD keeper to score the opening goal of the game.
Eagles’ second goal was reminiscent of the first as Margret Chisenga took advantage of ZISD’s lack of concentration in the back to double Eagles advantage in the 39th minute.
Down 2-0 at half-time, ZISD looked eager to respond, it was not a surprise when they changed the complexion of the second half by quickly breaking into an attack in an attempt to unlock Eagles’ defense.
Subsequently, the home side paid for their missed chances when Cindy Banda dribbled two defenders to put the ball in the back of the net following a inch perfect pass from Rosemary Nyirongo to seal a 3-0 victory in the 80th minute.
Eagles finished 6th on the log but perhaps the biggest positive to take is Eagles’ defence that secured more clean sheets than any other club in the division.
Tonge has since credited her teammates and technical bench for her resounding record in between the sticks.
She further added “We will reflect on our campaign and analyze what we could have done better in order to improve, we want to come back stronger.”
While Tonge has received call ups to the senior provision squad, she remains optimistic that she will one day don the colours of the national team because that step would mean a lot to her and her family.
