explored the reasons why we trade our independence for obedience.
Jeet Kune Do today is often taught as a rigid system disguised as Bruce Leeβs philosophy. Few techniques, strict hierarchies, and instructors acting as gatekeepers of legitimacy.
Almost exclusively preying on novices, these instructors target vulnerable students seeking a sense of identity and belonging, using the Jeet Kune Do name as a padlock to imprison and control their minds, rather than a key to unlock and liberate their spirits.

λμ¬λ² Daesabeom Niall Peter Grange brought me up in Taekwondo and Hapkido in my youth. Originally from Ireland, Daesabeom was part of the underground TKD brotherhood in London in the 1970s and 1980s, when full-contact Taekwondo was at its best. A truly inspiring martial artist who taught me so much.

Sifu Emil Martirossian from Brighton & Hove, UK. A truly special martial artist and an incredible teacher. He has travelled the world promoting Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and Chinese Kung Fu, spreading the knowledge at international events, seminars, and in Hollywood movies as a professional stuntman β―οΈ

Grandmaster Kevin Liu, my Sigung in Wing Chun from Brighton, UK, who passed down Foshan style Wing Chun Kuen to my Sifu Emil Martirossian. Sigung Liu was a student of Lok Yiu, who was a student of Ip Man. Sigung Liu is a truly humble and exceptionally knowledgeable individual, someone I continue to look up to π
Bruce Lee's Split-Entry method is another example of his ingenuity and flair for an East meets West approach. He took Wing Chun's bridging and trapping framework, injected Boxing's mobility and combinations, then structured it around Fencing principles of timing and interception.
Put succinctly, the method is:
β’ Intercept (Fencing timing)
β’ Occupy centre and control limbs (Wing Chun)
β’ Hit immediately with combinations (Boxing)
However, you are not bound by the techniques shown here. Have fun coming up with your own stylistic sequences based on your ongoing research and development across the ever-evolving martial arts landscape.
This was something G**o Dan Inosanto emphasised to us in his classes, and I have fond memories of returning to our own gym with Sifu Emil where we would take the core concepts and experiment with new ideas; adding, discarding, and refining according to our own preferences and needs along the way. This is what makes training fun! Doing the same thing day in and day out gets old fast (and becomes counter-productive) so don't be discouraged from being creative and walking your own path π As Sijo Bruce encouraged:
"The creative individual is always more important than any established style or system... Jeet Kune Do has no style, it can fit in with all styles. As a result, Jeet Kune Do utilizes all ways and is bound by none and, likewise, uses any technique which serve its end." βTao of JKD (1975)β

Well done to my student Aasiya (now Coach Aasiya) on opening your very own club. I remember it was always your dream to open a school that would empower our local community here in Zambia, especially women and children. Super proud to have been a small part of your journey π₯β―οΈ
