Zambians Seek Improved Teamwork at AFCON

Football fans have urged the Chipolopolo Boys to raise their performance levels as Zambia takes on Comoros tonight in their second Group A match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations -AFCON.

Speaking to ZNBC Sports, football supporter JAMES NTANI said the team is capable of delivering a much stronger display than they showed in their opening match against Mali.

NTANI said he is pleased with how far the team has progressed but believes players must put in more effort on the pitch.

He also encouraged fellow supporters to continue backing the team.

Another fan, PRISCA MUSONDA, said the side needs to improve its work rate, citing limited cooperation during matches.

She noted that better teamwork and commitment will be vital for improved results.

Meanwhile, WILFRED MALAMA said the Chipolopolo Boys must sharpen their attacking options, cautioning that Comoros will pose a tough challenge.

MALAMA predicted a draw but said a strong overall performance would make the nation proud.

CHIPOLOPOLO striker Patson Daka says his belief in God helps him rise above the criticism he receives whenever he is experiencing a goal drought or going through a run of poor form.

On Monday, Daka leapt high to head home a cross delivered by Nkana defender Mathews Banda, helping Zambia secure a 1–1 draw against Mali at a time when all indications suggested Chipolopolo were headed for defeat.

The draw keeps Zambia firmly in contention for qualification to the round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON). Their next match is against Comoros, who began their campaign with a 2–0 loss to hosts Morocco.

Before Monday’s goal, Daka had not scored for Zambia since the 2–1 win over Malawi in an international friendly on March 26, 2024, making him the subject of occasional memes and criticism from fans, journalists, and some former players.

Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the match, Daka said he does not allow difficult spells to affect him.

“God has always been my strength, and I believe that what is meant for me will always come at the right time. I don’t rush anything; I just keep doing what I am supposed to do. When the right time comes, it will happen, and I am just glad that it happened today,” Daka said.

Daka added that he is fully aware of the quality he brings to the team.

“I know the quality that I bring to the team, and I always try to help in every way I can—not only by scoring, but through whatever contribution I can make. That is what is important to me. I know I am a striker and that I need to score goals, but if it doesn’t happen, I don’t stress myself.

As long as I am doing the right things, the goals will come. If they don’t, then it was simply not meant to happen,” he said.
