Sawu on Cameroon goal
By Robert Gava in Filabusi
IT was that one goal that separated men from boys. This was Agent Sawu's goal against Cameroon in a qualifier in 1993 that ejected 60 000 off their seats at the giant National Sports Stadium. Sawu still remembers the goal. "I will never forget that solitary goal against Cameroon at the National Sports Stadium." The legendary Warriors striker made his mark as an 18 year old playing for the Zimbabwe Under-20 side in 1989.
He went on to play 75 internationals for the senior national team netting 75 goals. He starred for Chikwata and moved to Cyprus in 1991 with Rahman Gumbo.
The former Soccer Star of the Year, had a fruitful stint in Switzerland and his exploits took him to China and South Africa. He also played for Dynamos. The 49-year-old coach started his coaching career at OR Tambo FC where he was assistant to Tauya Murewa. The former striker is still involved in football and last year he was a volunteer coach at Highlanders Royals. "Having 75 caps and 25 goals for the Warriors has made me proud and I wish the future generation could emulate what we achieved as well. "I really miss football and I hope Covid 19 ends soon so that we can enjoy the most beautiful game." His advise to upcoming footballers is that the must stay focused, dedicated and disciplined.
