On Saturday, our U7s and U9s began their preparations for the upcoming Fearless Fledgling Falcons U9 Cricket Tournament in October this year. The coaches took them through fielding, bowling and a bit of game awareness. By the end of this 12-week programme, our children should all be at par and ready for this exciting tournament.

Some proficient U9s, U11s through to U17 concentrated on range-hitting, the straight drive and sweep shot before taking high-catches towards the end of our session.

With the Mavericks Cricket U13 Tournament coming up, coaches are pulling all the stops to send an U13 and an U11 side to compete.

Our normal group session on Saturday featured unified start and finish times for all age-groups. We managed to continue bowling basics and a mini-game for U7s and U9s with Coach Yolanda Vongai Bikwa and Coach Ian. Coach Kelvin Keegan Jena, Coach Nigel Mupurura took some U9s and U11s for batting and fielding, respectively while our Manager assisted U13s and U17s with batting on the net.

On Sunday, we had a voluntary mini net session for U7s at Harare Sports Club where the little ones learnt bowling and batting drills. Most of them are now confident enough to face the 135g leather ball after graduating from the tennis ball and dimpled jug balls.

Last Saturday, the coldest yet this June, was our first full practice in our tracksuits (at least before some of them took them off just as we were about to finish🤣). Coach Kelvin Keegan Jena took the U7s for a game situation practice that lasted the length of the practice. Thr kids took turns to bowl, bat and field in the fun, supervised cricket game.

Coach Ian ran bowling and fielding stations for U9s and U11s while our some U11s, U13s and U17s worked on their straight batting technique with our Manager.

On the sidelines, our sublimated coaches' puffer jackets were a marvelous spectacle🔥🔥🔥

The concept of playing in Shona and Ndebele is "kutamba" and "ukudlala" respectively and the loose, natural interpretation for children, where cricket is concerned, is primarily holding a bat and "playing" a ball🤣 (aka a Menace with a bat haha😄)

Thankfully, our coaches are too aware of this notion and they craft our practices to ensure "playing" is comprehensive enough to include bowling, fielding and batting classes. Sometimes you often hear kids giving their parents feedback that "I didn't play today😔" especially in matches where they did not get a chance to bat (but bowled and fielded🤣🤣🤣).

Long story short, Coach Yolanda conducted a beautiful bowling class for U7s and U9s while Coach Ian did some fielding and a bit of batting for thr little ones. Fun times!

Coach Keegan had the older group do batting and some fielding with U13s and U17s while our Manager, holding the fort for Coach Nigel Mupurura, took U11s for fielding.

Hard-hitting U17 Captain Simba Darren Chiurugo got a surprise gift from an Australia-based Falcons well wisher in the form of brand new ASICS spikes to improve his game. Last year, U13 bowling sensation, Ethan Mufukwa, received a pair of brand new Gray-Nicolls spikes from the same benefactor - he's never looked back since; taking at least 3 wickets in every match and currently topping the National Premier League U13 Bowling and MVP rankings!

They say a picture tells a thousand words! Without our steady-hand cameraman this past weekend, we have a few thousand words missing.

After our practice at Alexandra Sports Club - Harare, Zimbabwe, we headed over to The Hill Preparatory School for cricket and soccer training where we had a great time on first day!

This week our age group training is harmonised again starting at 7.45am and finishing at 10.15 for all age-groups! By the way, we have midweek practice every Tuesday at 2pm at Harare Sports Club.

Yesterday we were fortunate to have Zimbabwe Cricket National Academy opener Takudzwa Nyamugure help the kids with their batting from U9 upwards.

We did our first weekly assessments for the Falcons U9 Leadership Programme after our U9 training - what a fun experience reviewing all the crafts they made at home during the week!

We entered week 2 of our practice for the Mavericks U13 Cricket Tournament where all our U11 and U13 teams will be competing.
