The Farmers Market at Ekhayeni - The African Village

So, there we were brainstorming about our Farmers Market, throwing ideas, visualizing etc. What is it going to look like, I asked - a trade center definitely - muzinda wemari - millions or billions will definitely change hands there. Millions, Billions, farmers market, is that practical, I asked myself, how are we going to move millions, billions and in whose hands are these millions gonna land!?

The Farmer, the middlemen, the processor, who? What will be the set-up, is it a sisonke kinda market, where everything and anything goes so long money?

What principles and vision are we building this farmers market upon? ..and what is it going to look like, the physical appearance?

Now, for a farmers market to move millions or even billions there are certain things that I think should happen first...

1. A Farmer should perfect his trade, he has to produce quality crops, livestock, poultry etc. It all begins with choice of crops, seeds, land preparation, crop management, harvesting, post harvest crop management, etc etc

2. Value addition - gone are the days when we used to sell animal skins etc at a give away price (ko matehwe tomadini) to europe then import shoes, handbags and glue at a premium.

3. Cashflow management - Farmer akarongeka should be in a position to save money, invest in knowledge, insurance, plant and equipment. I know of some farmers who owns private jets, boats, they have perfected their trade so such an extent!

Now, at Ekhayeni Farmers Market, the banana Farmer from Honde Valley will not travel all the way from Honde just to sell bananas on a bunch, no!, of course she will sell some bananas on a bunch but you will also find banana powder, processed to perfection, packaged and labelled fit for export!

You will not only buy amasi from the dairy farmer but cream, yoghurt, butter etc same applies to the ginger, tomatoes and garlic farmer.

The bee farmer will be taught how to squeeze a dollar out of every imaginable product ever to come out of a bee, edible honey, bees wax, propolis even the bee hive.

We will squeeze juice from r**e or covo if need be and ichinaka, muchiinwa and muchidzokazve Farmer achiisa mari muhomwe, kwete kutengesa bundle for 35c, no ndaramba.

If you are a farmer and you think Ekhayeni Farmers Market can be your home. Kindly app +263 779 438 025, +263 777 929 117, +263 779 020 480 or email [email protected] for more information

Ekhayeni - The African Village

Ekhayeni, is the name we christened our African Village, which is not just a “marketplace” but a collaborative and creative community of small businesses. Ekhayeni is the polarisation of the word Ekhaya – Meaning Kumusha, Home, because that’s exactly what we are creating, a home experience for all and sundry, Zimbabwean urbanites, diplomats, expatriates and tourists. We are more than just a shopping, recreation and entertainment complex, we are home to designers, artists, foodies, musicians, culture seekers and lovers of good vibes.

As locals, we’re often asked for recommendations on places to dine, the best shopping spots, trusted hairdressers etc. Our intention is to make Zimbabwe proud, raise our flag high and make lots of money, yes lots of it while giving you a point of reference every time you are asked for recommendations.

We are creating a platform, a unique environment for talented local designers, collectors of art and wild fruits, farmers, foodpreneurs to connect and collaborate, we are creating a favorite hangout for locals and visitors, a culture hub, so help us God.

If you are a designer, hairdresser, art collector, daring, innovative, and you feel Ekhayeni could be your home.

Kindly email us on [email protected], [email protected] for more information on how you can become a part of our family.

Ekhayeni - The African Village (A glimpse into what we have in mind)

Imagine, if I remember correctly is the title of a song John Lennon composed eons ago. He would ask you to imagine certain scenarios and today am going to ask you to do the same thing. Imagine it’s a Saturday, you want to do something different, something that would take the edge off you and your family but here is the problem, the wife enjoys shopping for her kitchen, and she wants to go to a place where there is fresh food and herbs galore some place different where she can do her shopping without pressure. You Jack, you miss chicken makaya and maybe you miss brown sadza (sadza rezviyo) too.

Your teenage daughter wants something exotic, she heard Moroccan food is delicious but well, we are in Zimbabwe, so hey, rather stay at home. Go ahead IMAGINE, WHAT IF, what if you could go to a place where you can get farm produce fresh from the village, have the kids on a jumping castle, get a taste of not just traditional Zimbabwe dishes but several traditional dishes from different African Countries all in one place.

YES, An African Village Market and Food Court, Play Centre rolled into one. Botswana kitchen, Swaziland, Namibia, Morocco, Nigerian Kitchen all in one place. It’s been long in planning and yes it’s happening. ZONFA and its Partners are setting up an Ethnic Village Market Place with Mbare prices but Hollywood service. You can buy a road runner to take home after a sumptuous dinner in any country’s kitchen of your choice. It’s not all, you can also be a part of it. We looking for daring, innovative, entrepreneurs to run the different kitchens and other businesses.

Kindly email us on [email protected], [email protected] for more information.

Welcome to Ekhayeni - The African Village

Our Organisation, ZONFA (Zimbabwe Organic & Natural Food Association) is currently working on establishing an African Village - Ekhayeni. The idea behind the village is that Africa has inspired generations and its cuisines are world famous. They are unique, healthy, wholesome and natural. African Farmers produce tons of wholesome grains, free range chickens and eggs, nutritious wild fruits and vegetables, herbs, meats, the list is endless and each nation has its own unique recipes. Sadly they have lacked a forum to showcase and sell produce as well as showing off their expertise.

The Zimbabwe Organic & Natural Food Association has stepped up and is offering that unique place, that home away from home, that market place where an urbanite or expatriate can buy chicken makaya, tsunga, ginger and get to taste different cuisine from other African Countries as well. The African Village will be situated in Vainona, Harare and opens 01 August 2017.

The Village comprises one huge Traditional, Organic and Natural Food Farmers Market and Traditional Food Outlets representing Several African Nations, an Art and Craft Centre, Herbal Shop, Hair studio & Nail Bar, Events Centre, an African Couture Outlet among other retail establishments. Among other activities there shall be a battle of Nations every Saturday, where chefs from different nations will be fighting it out in the kitchen to the enjoyment of their customers and visitors.
