A good article to read if you get lower back pain from squats and lunges. Always remember what you are training for. If you are training to be strong for daily living then your knees should stay back away from toes when bending into your squat. Listen for those calls saying knees back and hinge from the hips. Watch your ROM and only lower to as far as your hips, ankles and knees are happy with. NO tilting pelvis back and increasing the curve in the lower back. Keep it curved to it's natural curve. Hold abs in, hinge at the hips and bend the knees. Push through the heels. If training specifically for sports that require good strong stability in joints to allow for safe agility, then you need to prepare the joints for those times when the knees might go over the toes.
