One of the practical tools we discussed during our Su***de Awareness session was QPR: Question. Persuade. Refer.

QPR is a simple, evidence-based approach that equips everyday people to recognise when someone may be thinking about su***de and respond in a way that helps keep them safe.

Q — Question

Ask the question directly and calmly: "Are you thinking about su***de?" Asking about su***de does not put the idea into someone's mind. It creates space for an honest conversation and lets the person know they do not have to carry their pain alone.

P — Persuade

Listen without judgment. Allow them to speak, acknowledge their feelings, and encourage them to accept help from someone they trust or a mental health professional.

R — Refer

Connect them to appropriate support. This may be a parent, guardian, counsellor, psychologist, trusted faith leader, or emergency services if they are in immediate danger. Never promise to keep suicidal thoughts or plans a secret.

A caring conversation can be the beginning of hope. Knowing what to say, listening well, and connecting someone to help can make a meaningful difference.

There are seasons when marriage feels difficult, parenting feels overwhelming, work feels heavy, or family relationships need attention. Experiencing challenges in one part of your life does not erase your strengths, your progress, or your value.

Healthy families and healthy relationships grow by recognising when support is needed and taking steps towards healing and growth. Asking for guidance, learning new skills, or having a difficult conversation is part of moving forward.

Growth begins when we give ourselves permission to work on the areas that need care.

Love may bring two people together, but every relationship still needs care, attention, communication, forgiveness, and shared experiences to keep growing.

Just as a car cannot keep moving without fuel, relationships need consistent investment to remain healthy through different seasons of life.

The strongest relationships are fuelled by what we choose to do every day.

Life fills our calendars with responsibilities, deadlines, children, work, and routines. Relationships also need dedicated time for the conversations that often get postponed.

The Vision Couples Retreat creates space for couples to reconnect, reflect on their journey, strengthen communication, and intentionally think about the future they are building together.

Registrations are open for the second Vision Couples Retreat in Zimbabwe. Reserve your place as a couple.

Getting a therapist involved is often seen as a last resort. It can also be a proactive step towards a healthier relationship or family.

Therapy creates a structured, confidential space to have conversations that feel difficult to navigate alone. It helps people understand communication patterns, work through conflict, strengthen relationships, and develop practical skills for moving forward.

Seeking support is an investment in healthier relationships.

When adults believe myths about su***de, they may miss opportunities to help a young person who is struggling.

Some teenagers do not say, "I want help." They communicate their pain through changes in behaviour, emotions and everyday conversations.

Many parents and caregivers only realise something was wrong after the signs have been present for weeks or months. Learning to recognise those signs creates an opportunity to respond before a crisis develops.

This week, CMPFA begins a series on recognising the cry for help in teenagers. We'll explore warning signs, myths, practical conversations, cyberbullying, and how families can become a place of safety and support.

If your child has been struggling emotionally, you don't have to navigate it alone. CMPFA offers counselling for children, teenagers and families, as well as parenting courses that help caregivers build healthier communication and stronger relationships.
