5 Lessons I have learned and am learning since graduating college (working title)
So thankful to have spent the past 2 years working for an amazing company with a culture, value, mission, and team like APTech. It has been a fun journey but one with many ups, downs and stretching moments. After spending some time reflecting this past weekend, below is a summary of the lessons I have learned in my first 2 years in the workforce.
1) "Learn to balance ambition and drive, with grace and patience" – You will make mistakes. If you haven’t learned this lesson yet through school and/or life, work will definitely not shy away from teaching it to you. In work (and life) there are so many variables that could lead to a mistake, therefore, it does you no good to tip-toe around each task you get. Give each day your best and know that failure is sometimes a better teacher than success. Therefore, the only real failure is not that you didn’t succeed, but that you didn’t learn.
2) "Ask questions, as silence slows progress" – Unlike when you were a student, as an employee you can’t spend hours and hours trying to solve a problem without making progress because each hour spent, is money spent! Therefore, by asking questions, you show your supervisor, team and/or client that you are attentively listening, and trying to work as effectively as possible. For some gentle-not-so-gentle motivation, remember, there is no “I” in team, but there is in “laid off”. 😊
3) "Ask “insightful” questions" – Now that you are fearless to ask questions, here’s your next lesson. Ever heard the saying, “there is no such thing as a stupid question?” that is not true. There are stupid questions, it’s just that there are many people that have a high tolerance for them. And although your coworkers and seniors may have such tolerance, stupid questions, can reveal you are clueless (which if you truly are, you should say so) or that you weren’t listening. Therefore, to avoid these kinds of questions take a couple of minutes to try answer the question yourself (Google has come to my rescue many times here). I have found that the best kind of questions are those that help you do a task more effectively and/or reveal new information to your boss/client.
4)"Choose to know and be known" – As humans, we are social beings and come most alive when we are in an environment where we feel valued, important and loved. Therefore, seek to create such an environment at your workplace. Use your coffee breaks, bathroom breaks and lunch breaks strategically to strike up a brief conversation with your co-workers. Learn more about their lives, hobbies, struggles and hopes; and don’t forget to share yours. As a result, your attitude towards work can change from the place where you go to make money and grow professionally, to the place where you do that and move a vision, project or assignment forward with people you care about.
5)"Remember your why" – Last but not least is lesson 5. This one is the backbone to all the other lessons. Especially if you are anything like me and lack the resilience to see past your present pain or challenge. Life has a unique way of throwing obstacles in your way that will threaten to throw you off course. This could be a personal obstacle (internal struggle, relationships, family, or friends) or work obstacle (difficult/bad coworker, project, or client). Therefore, when those obstacles come, put your why against the obstacle and it will assign purpose to the pain/challenge and help equip you with resilience and wisdom to see beyond it … or at least help you discern good, clear reasons why the obstacle put you on a different course. One that your heart, mind and soul are happy and at peace to now traverse on.
With these lessons, and the support love and connection from Jesus, good family and friends, regardless of your yesterday, you can always create a better tomorrow. So now at 25, with a little more joy and confidence than before, I look forward to the ups, and the downs, the next few years may bring. 😊
