A Zimbabwean MP has allegedly lost US$100,000 in a fake foreign investment deal after falling victim to a suspected counterfeit money syndicate operating in Harare.

Police arrested a Ghanaian national accused of masterminding the scam after detectives uncovered thousands of fake US$100 notes, chemicals, machinery, and equipment allegedly used to manufacture counterfeit currency.

According to court documents, the suspect convinced the legislator that millions of dollars meant for investment had been “chemically stained” and needed special equipment from South Africa to restore the money.

The MP reportedly paid US$100,000 for the supposed machine — only to later discover trunks filled with pillows, an electric iron, and counterfeit notes.

Investigators say another victim from Mutorashanga also lost US$40,000 in a similar “black money” scam.
