Here is Nadine Sierra singing Rodolfo’s aria, a role written for tenor.

We’re seeing more and more singers exploring repertoire traditionally written for another gender and sometimes another voice type.

And it can reveal completely new colours in music we thought we knew.

But does voice type matter when we simply listen to the artistry?

Jessye Norman never liked to define herself too strictly by one voice type. Here she is singing Dalila, a role written for mezzo-soprano.

Listen to how beautifully she adapts her sound.

She doesn’t simply make the voice darker. She explores the warmer, darker colours that are already available within her extraordinary instrument.

That is something every singer can learn from. Your voice may have far more colours and possibilities than you are currently using, but they should be discovered without forcing the instrument into a sound that doesn’t belong to it.

Exploring those possibilities safely and finding what truly works for YOUR voice is something I work on individually with singers.

This is Bruno de Sá singing Händel’s Tu del ciel ministro eletto.

And yes, you are hearing an adult male singer performing in the soprano range.

For centuries, some of the most spectacular high male voices in opera belonged to the CASTRATI.

Thankfully, today we can experience extraordinary voices like this without the horrific practice that created those voices in the past.

Bruno de Sá’s voice is exceptionally rare, and his combination of range, agility and expression is fascinating to hear.

Listen to how Pavarotti explains and demonstrates “covering” the voice and laryngeal tilt.

Covering and laryngeal tilt are not the same thing. Both can influence how the upper range feels and sounds, but they involve different vocal adjustments.

Understanding these differences can be especially important when you’re struggling with the passaggio or high notes.

What works beautifully for one singer may not be the right coordination for another.

This is exactly the kind of technical work I do individually with singers.

What does the DEVIL sound like? Samuel Ramey may have the answer. 😳

Samuel Ramey as Mefistofele is one of those performances that gives me goosebumps.

That rich, dark voice combined with his almost diabolical stage presence is irresistible.

But great stage presence isn’t something you simply add on top of the singing. It grows out of the voice, the music and the character.

Finding what makes YOUR voice distinctive and learning how to use it expressively on stage is something I love working on individually with singers.

Many singers create tension before they even sing the first note.

The NECK tightens, the chin moves, the body loses its natural alignment. And very often, the reason isn’t only physical.

“Will the high note work?”
“Will they like my voice?”
“Will I sing well today?”

The moment these thoughts take over, your body starts reacting before you’ve even made a sound.

Good singing begins before the first note, with awareness, alignment and a body that is ready to respond freely.

Who really benefits from a classical singing masterclass?

In my opinion, mainly singers who are already quite advanced.

A masterclass is intense. You may have only a short amount of time with the teacher, often in front of many other singers and listeners.

That is not the ideal setting to begin fixing fundamental technical problems.

The real value begins when the basic technique is already there and the work can move into refinement:

style, interpretation, repertoire, stage presence, and those small details that can make a very big difference.

At a certain level, the smallest adjustments can change everything.

And for ONE TENOR, this idea will soon become a very special opportunity.

This performance made me think.

We often rely so much on what we see.

But what happens when a singer experiences music without visual distractions?

I sometimes wonder whether that allows an even deeper connection to sound, breath and emotion.

And I sometimes tell my students to close their eyes...

Of course, every singer is unique, and there is no simple answer. But performances like this remind us that truly moving an audience is about far more than what we see on stage.

The voice tells the story.
