The hand does not strike the past and
It cannot block the future. Water does not argue with the shape of the river.
The bamboo does not become strong by becoming rigid.
And the skilled practitioner does not chase the moment.
He arrives before it is gone.
Perhaps presence is not holding tightly to the now.
Perhaps it is simply letting go
of everything that is not happening.
The past has already become water.
The future has not yet taken form.
There is only the empty hand—
waiting,
listening,
moving.
And then, without forcing,
the next movement reveals itself.
