Trigger warning: discussion of suicidal ideation.

I started practicing yoga around 15 years ago, but didn’t commit to a regular practice until around 10 years ago.

Back then, yoga was something I felt like I “should” be doing. Getting there was always the hardest part. Showing up. Sitting with myself. Feeling everything I was trying so hard not to feel.

I still remember my first class. I think I spent most of it lying in savasana. And honestly, sitting in a dysregulated body for an hour while contemplating su***de ain’t for the weak.

Yoga wasn’t something I enjoyed.

It wasn’t relaxing.

It wasn’t something I looked forward to.

It was work.

In many ways, it was the work.

When we moved from Wagga to Albury during a particularly difficult season of life, I found Ardor Albury | Yoga | Pilates | Meditation | Wellbeing Clinic
At times, it felt like the only constant I had when everything else felt chaotic.

Week after week, I showed up.

Over time, my relationship with yoga changed. What once felt impossible became something I couldn’t imagine living without.

Yoga has taught me how to come back to my body, connect with my breath, regulate my nervous system and create space between my thoughts and my reactions. Research consistently shows benefits for anxiety, depression, stress and overall wellbeing.

If yoga feels like something you “should” do but the resistance is strong, this is your reminder that it’s called a practice for a reason.

You don’t have to love it.

You just have to start.

Happy International Yoga Day 🤍

And to the incredible teachers who have held space for me over the years, thank you. Your impact has lasted far longer than you’ll ever know.

Suffering shakes the foundation of who you think you are, so you can discover who you truly are.

Once you start identifying with the witness and not the wound, your life changes.

Who ever needs to hear this 🫶🏻🫶🏻
If you have gone back to the vice you swore you’d never touch again.
Sent the text.
Crossed the boundary.
Drank the drink.
Stayed too long.
Shut down.
Self-sabotaged.

Take a breath.

One moment doesn’t erase the work you’ve done. One hard day doesn’t define who you are.

Being human isn’t about never falling back into old patterns. It’s about recognising them, taking responsibility, and choosing again.

Nobody prepares you for the moment you realise…

You can tick every box society gave you…

…and still not feel like yourself.

If that’s where you are, you’re in the right place.

‼️ This is why insight alone isn’t enough.

You can sit in therapy every week. You can have all the awareness in the world. You can understand exactly why you do what you do.

But healing happens when you begin making different choices outside the therapy room.

The work is saying no when your nervous system wants to people please.

The work is setting the boundary when your body is terrified of disappointing someone.

The work is going to bed earlier when your old coping strategies want you scrolling until midnight.

The work is feeling the emotion instead of numbing it.

The work is choosing self-respect over self-abandonment.

And here’s the part that catches so many people off guard…

At first, it often feels worse.

Not because you’re doing it wrong.

Because your nervous system has spent years, sometimes decades, learning that chaos is familiar. Hypervigilance is familiar. Overthinking is familiar. Overgiving is familiar. Avoidance, perfectionism, bingeing, drinking, people pleasing, staying small… they’re familiar.

Peace isn’t.

So when you start choosing differently, your nervous system may resist.

It may convince you to go back to old patterns.

It may whisper that this isn’t working.

It may call growth “self sabotage” when really you’re standing at the edge of something unfamiliar.

Healing is not just learning to regulate your nervous system.

It’s teaching yourself that peace is safe.

That rest is safe.

That boundaries are safe.

That being yourself is safe.

And most importantly, that you no longer need to abandon yourself to belong.

That is where real change begins..
