Sō-Budō Kumite™ | Our First International Workshop

Today marked another important step in the development of Sō-Budō Kumite™, as we held our first international workshop to introduce and explain the training and competition framework.

Thank you to everyone who participated in person and online, especially to our international study group leaders who will help guide the grassroots development of Sō-Budō Kumite™ in their respective countries.

Our immediate focus is on building understanding, developing skills, and sharing knowledge through structured training and collaboration.

We are taking a measured, grassroots approach, allowing the practice to evolve through experience, feedback, and a shared commitment to the principles of Budō.

A small but meaningful beginning to our international journey.

YOUR SAFETY. YOUR WELLBEING. OUR COMMITMENT.

At Jin Sei Ryū Karate-Dō, we believe that every student deserves to train in a safe, respectful, supportive and inclusive environment.

Our commitment to student protection is underpinned by our vision, mission and values, which guide not only how we train and teach, but also how we treat and care for one another.

We encourage all students, parents and families to familiarise themselves with our Student Protection Policy and Complaints Handling Procedures.

We also remind our members that they can raise any concerns directly with any of our three designated Student Protection Officers:

- Kyoshi Sylvie Ellsmore
- Sensei Anthony Borgese
- Shuseki Shihan Clive Davidson

Our officers are available to listen, provide guidance and help ensure that concerns are addressed respectfully, sensitively and in accordance with our established procedures.

We encourage everyone to speak up if they experience or witness behaviour that is inconsistent with our values.

Student protection is a shared responsibility. It is fundamental to maintaining the trust, confidence and wellbeing of our karate community.

Grow. Lead. Serve Others. Through our karate training.

INTRODUCING SŌ-BUDŌ KUMITE™

Budō Innovation. Rooted in Tradition.

Jin Sei Ryū Karate-Dō International is very pleased to announce the development of Sō-Budō Kumite™, a new framework for martial arts sparring, designed for both dojo training and competitive application.

Developed over several years within Jin Sei Ryū Karate-Dō, this initiative builds upon established martial arts traditions to provide a structured and progressive approach to sparring that encourages technical development, adaptability and the practical application of martial arts skills.

While originating within Jin Sei Ryū, Sō-Budō Kumite is intended for practitioners from different martial arts styles and organisations, offering opportunities to broaden their experience, challenge themselves and develop their skills in a spirit of mutual respect.

We are delighted to have the commitment and support of four respected international martial arts leaders in developing and promoting this initiative:

Kaicho Grant Campbell — United States
Soke Solly Said — South Africa
Kyoshi Damian Asling — United Kingdom
Senpai Altaf Rahamatulla — France

Together, we look forward to further developing Sō-Budō Kumite and introducing this framework to the wider international Budō community.

More details coming soon.

If you would like to learn more about Sō-Budō Kumite or express your interest in this initiative, please send me a direct message.

Today, Senpai Caitlin completed her grading to Sandan. She did an outstanding job over several weeks, despite balancing the commitments of university and work.

Caitlin started her karate training at just five years old and has now been training continuously for 15 years.

It is quite special for one of our young students to begin with us as a child and continue their journey into adulthood, progressing through to Sandan. Only Sensei Max, Sensei Kyra, and now Senpai Caitlin have trained continuously from childhood and achieved this rank.

We are very proud of Caitlin's commitment, perseverance and achievement.

Congratulations and well done. Osu!

Tonight, I was very sad to learn of the passing of Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje Jr.

My sister Nornale and I were very fortunate to train directly and privately under Master Leo from 1977–1979 in New York. It was a formative time for Filipino Martial Arts in America, and Master Leo was one of the pioneers responsible for introducing and developing FMA in the United States, especially on the East Coast.

Looking back at these old photographs brings back many memories of those early years and reminds me how fortunate we were to have learned directly from him.

Master Leo was an important part of my early martial arts journey, and the knowledge and experiences he shared with us have remained with me throughout my life.

We are very saddened to hear of his passing and are praying for his soul and for his family during this difficult time.

May Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje Jr. forever rest in peace.
