The Melbourne Ice's first ever AIHL match was played on 4 May 2002. The Ice played Adelaide Avalanche at home at Olympic Ice Rink, Oakleigh. The match was tough with a combined total of 77 penalty minutes. The Ice outshot the Avalanche 31 to 25 with Greg Sturrock scoring the Ice's first ever AIHL goal, assisted by Ross Howell and Jon Moses. Vinnie Hughes scored the Ice's second goal but it proved to be a consolation goal as Adelaide defeated the Ice 5–2.

The Ice journey commenced.

Next year marks the 25th. Anniversary of AIHL participation of the Melbourne Ice and want it to memorable for past players, players, volunteers, fans, members, sponsors. In the comments below send us your ideas for inclusion into our planning.
