Comment “RANGE” and I’ll send you instant access to my hip mobility routines so you can start unlocking deeper range in your hips! 🤝
The Horse Stance (Ma Bu) has been practised in Chinese martial arts for centuries, with strong historical ties to Shaolin training.
And there’s a reason this position has stood the test of time.
It’s one of my favourite movements for building serious strength, endurance and mobility through the hips and adductors.
But here’s the problem…
Most people treat the Horse Stance like a regular squat.
And by doing so, they’re missing out on some of its biggest benefits.
Here are 3 coaching cues to help you get more out of this position 👇
1️⃣ STACK YOUR RIBS OVER YOUR HIPS
Maintain a tall, upright posture with your shoulders and rib cage stacked over your pelvis.
Avoid folding forward like a conventional squat.
This helps create greater demand through your adductors and groin while building postural strength and endurance.
2️⃣ ACTIVELY ABDUCT YOUR HIPS
Think about pushing your knees outwards and spreading the floor apart with your feet.
This creates active tension through your hip abductors, particularly the glute medius.
The goal isn’t just to sit in the position.
It’s to actively create strength and stability while you’re there.
3️⃣ LEARN TO CONTROL YOUR PELVIS
Experiment with moving between anterior and posterior pelvic tilt.
A slight anterior pelvic tilt can help you access deeper hip range by changing the relationship between your pelvis and femurs.
But don’t force it!
Find the pelvic position that allows you to move deeper while maintaining strength and control.
