See the finger for scale. So tiny!

White’s Seahorse

Always a fun sighting at Clifton Gardens, and with a heartwarming story behind them too.

With the population on the decline, made an effort to help boost numbers by running a breeding program, releasing many baby seahorses back into the ocean. Nowadays, it seems as though you can’t swim past the nets or seahorse hotels around Clifton Gardens without spotting several of these little gems!

Unfortunately due to habitat destruction and repeat rain events landed them on the endangered list in 2020.

The Bobbit Worm…

Frightening creature, ambush predator. They hang out in their holes until a poor unsuspecting fish swims past. Before you know it…BAM! The Bobbit Worm snatches the fish, clamping down on the fish with its strong jaws and drags it down into the sandy depths.

These creatures may only show a few centimetres on the surface, but there’s a whole lot more to them under the sand. Bobbit worms grow on average to around a meter, with the largest worm reaching a whopping 3 meters!

Madrella RB1, a bright red nudibranch from South Australia.

You might be thinking, there’s not much there, and you’d be right! This little fella is only about 5mm long and difficult to spot, other than the bright red orange colour to it.

Can’t find too many fun facts about them I’m sorry! But apparently they like hanging out in rocky reefs and tide pools, which checks out given this one was found on the rocky breakwater at Port Noarlunga.

A change from the regular diving pics…a silhouette of the Koo Wee Rup Observation Tower with the Aurora happening behind it. So. Many. Colours!

Spectacular display from a Leafy Seadragon with a clutch of eggs ❤️🐉

These Leafies are no doubt one of the most photogenic animals, with their bright colours and leaf-like appendages.

Conditions were amazing at Rapid Bay Jetty but light was fading. Fortunately this made for a nice eery backdrop behind the illuminated leafy.

An obscene amount of prep went into getting this shot. A huge thanks to my dive buddy .hair.do.care for putting up with me 😜

Plus we would have never of found them without the expert advice from who steered us in the right direction. On ya team! We’ll see you on our next Leafy expedition!

Cow fish with a parasite!…and one without 😉

A little gross, but this poor Cowfish has attracted an unwanted friend. Attached to its skin is a Striped fish louse or Creniola laticauda. Not as harmful as other parasites, it will simply latch onto the skin of a host, as apposed to some which may actually crawl in through the gills and into the mouth where it ‘removes’ the younger and then sits there in its place! 🤢 that’s a story for anyone wanting more details.

Poor fishies!

A curious octopus peaking through a hole.

Octopus lack any external armour and so they rely on hiding in little nooks and crevices to protect themselves from danger.

Ceratosoma brevicaudatum, a colourful nudibranch from down under ❤️

A type of sea slug, they are frequently spotted on the southern parts of Australia. This particular species can grow quite large, up to about 15cm in some cases. There are also variations of colour found amongst this family of Nudibranch however orange is the most common.

When it’s dinner time…and you’re not sure which side of the plate you are on 😬

Not to worry, this Glass Shrimp is actually the one about to eat! They play an important role in the reef by providing a cleaning service to nearby fish. You can see another already jumped on board for a clean.

They have even been known to clean a passing scuba diver!

One of the more incredible underwater creatures, the Leafy Seadragon. So bright and vibrant!

Special thanks to for helping to point us in the right direction to find these beauties 🙏
