WHEN PUBERTY MEETS PERIMENOPAUSE
Two hormonal transitions. One household. A whole lot of Hormageddon™!
It's ADHD Awareness Month and Menopause Awareness Month, and there's a conversation we need to be having.
Imagine a mom navigating perimenopause while her teenager is going through puberty. Both experiencing hormonal changes, both struggling with emotions, and perhaps both trying to understand their own neurodivergence.
Mom needs quiet. Her teenager needs connection.
Mom feels overwhelmed. Her teenager feels misunderstood.
And life doesn't stop.
There's still work, school, bills, ageing parents, relationships and the everyday expectation to somehow hold it all together.
Sometimes neither has the capacity to give the other what they need.
Interestingly, Australia held separate Senate inquiries into ADHD (2023) and menopause (2024). Both identified gaps in understanding and support. And in 2026, Monash University published research exploring women's experiences of ADHD symptoms across hormonal life stages.
Yet we continue to look at these issues separately.
In real life, they're happening under the same roof, sometimes before breakfast!
That's Hormageddon™. The collision of hormones, brain wiring, the nervous system and life load.
Sometimes it's not a difficult teenager or an impatient mom. It's two people navigating enormous changes who don't fully understand what's happening to themselves, let alone each other.
Before asking, "What's wrong with them?" perhaps we need to ask, "What's happening for them?"
A little understanding, compassion and grace can make all the difference.
