During the 1932-33 Ashes series, England captain Douglas Jardine developed a tactic called Bodyline bowling, which was designed to stifle the scoring of Australia’s greatest batsman Don Bradman. Bodyline bowling was so controversial that it almost caused a diplomatic incident between England and Australia.

The name “Ashes” comes from a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, immediately after Australia’s 1882 victory at The Oval, its first Test win on English soil. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia".
