Find exercises that you enjoy doing.
At the beginning all exercises might feel a bit strange and uncomfortable. Having a coach there to help show you ways of performing exercise, making it as strong and stable as possible is a great help in starting to enjoy them more. If the exercises you have chosen to complete as a part of your training program aren’t enjoyable, you aren’t likely to complete that training program to the best of your ability. The traditional barbell squat, benchpress and deadlift are good exercises for the majority of people to progress in because they are enjoyable, but that doesn’t mean that they are the best exercises to fit in to your program!
Have A Plan and stick to it.
The plan is to improve in the exercises that have been chosen. In the context of the gym, when we talk about a plan it would be referring to the training program. This involves trying to be a little bit better at the exercises that are in your training program every time you are in gym, until it is time to deload and rest, and then the training cycle starts again. Improving in the chosen exercises could mean an extra rep, improving technique or moving up in the weight being used. The next part of having a plan is being able to commit to it. Sticking to the planned progression and completing the number of training sessions per week/month/year is the most important step, after that the finer details of completing the weight prescribed, intended sets, reps and technique come in to play. This is a long term game and the more consistent you are, the more successful you will be.
Full attention to what you’re doing.
When you concentrate on the task at hand, your performance will improve. Funnily enough, training your muscles require’s brain power. During a training session you can do this by going through a mental review of what could have been improved after each set completed. Another part of being fully present in the gym is the amount of effort you put in to each repetition. Every repetition should be treated with the same intent of absolutely crushing it. Don’t do it half-heartedly.
