The Knights have continued their remarkable turnaround from last year’s wooden spoon with a 20-10 win over the Rabbitohs at Allianz Stadium, booking a place in Week Two of the finals. A double from Jermaine McEwen and 285 metres from Kalyn Ponga helped Newcastle secure their first away finals victory since 2013.

South Sydney’s attack was disrupted by Cody Walker’s first-half calf injury, while Jayden Sullivan struggled with his kicking game. Manly have appointed Sir Steve Hansen as their new Football Performance Director, making an immediate move to strengthen the club ahead of the 2027 season. The former All Blacks coach, who guided New Zealand to an 87% winning rate across 107 Tests, will work closely with head coach Kieran Foran, CEO Jason King and the football department.

Kalyn Ponga, Jack Williams and rising Storm talent Cooper Clarke are among the new faces named in New Zealand’s extended World Cup squad. Ponga is on the verge of his international debut after the eligibility rules were changed, while Williams is awaiting International Rugby League clearance but is expected to qualify through his New Zealand-born mother.

The Kiwis have also selected Origin players Casey McLean and Briton Nikora, while Francis Manuleleua and Thomas Mikeale have been named in both the New Zealand and Samoa squads. Warriors youngsters Jacob Laban, Tanner Stowers-Smith and Taine Tuaupiki are also included, with injuries ruling Kaeo Weekes and Trey Mooney out of contention.

Brisbane superstar Reece Walsh remains in Australia’s extended World Cup squad despite his syndesmosis injury and is expected to be fit if selected. Dylan Lucas and Fletcher Sharpe are emerging bolters, while Rabbitohs star David Fifita, Tallis Duncan and Tom Jenkins are among those in contention for their Australian debuts.

The Perth Bears have signed talented five-eighth Zac Herdegen on a one-year development deal ahead of their inaugural NRL season. The 20-year-old has built his career through the Queensland pathways system, captaining Queensland Country Under-17s and representing emerging squads through Under-19 level. Herdegen has made 34 Hostplus Cup appearances for Northern Pride over the past two seasons and finished as the club’s leading point-scorer in 2026 with 114 points. The goal-kicking playmaker has also featured in two NRL trials for the Cowboys and will now look to develop under coach Mal Meninga in Perth.

Jacob Gagai has signed a two-year deal with Warrington Wolves ahead of the 2027 Super League season, becoming the club’s fourth recruit of the transfer window. The 30-year-old centre joins from Huddersfield Giants, where he scored 24 tries in 51 games across two seasons after making his NRL debut with South Sydney in 2024.

The NRL will trial a smaller Steeden in Saturday’s NRLW wooden-spoon clash between the Sharks and Dragons at Allianz Stadium. The modified ball will be 2cm shorter and 20-30g lighter than the standard size five, with the trial designed to collect data on its impact on passing, kicking and ball control.

Melbourne Storm centre Marion Seve has announced his retirement following the 2026 season, ending an eight-season career in Melbourne. Storm Player #193, the 31-year-old finishes with 52 NRL games for the club and three Tests for Samoa after making his debut in 2019. The Ipswich product battled several serious injuries throughout his career, including a significant eye injury in 2025 before making an inspirational comeback. Seve leaves the Storm as a highly respected figure who overcame repeated setbacks to continue representing the club.

Veteran prop Paul Vaughan will retire from professional rugby league at the end of the 2026 Super League season, bringing the curtain down on a 14-year career spanning more than 300 top-flight games. The former NSW, Australian and Italian international has represented the Raiders, Dragons, Bulldogs, Warrington and York Knights, where he has played a key leadership role in 2026. Rabbitohs captain Cameron Murray has been crowned South Sydney’s Jack Rayner Players’ Player for 2026, voted the club’s best and fairest by his teammates. The award was presented by NRL Football Manager Jason Clark at Saturday night’s Red and Green Ball, recognising Murray’s leadership and performances throughout the season.

Storm fullback Sua Fa’alogo has capped a breakout 2026 season by winning the Cameron Smith Player of the Year Award. The Victorian product played all 24 games, scoring a career-best 18 tries, while also claiming the Most Improved Player, Members Player of the Year and Best Try awards. Fa’alogo polled 35 votes to finish ahead of Stefano Utoikamanu (31), Harry Grant (18) and Tyran Wishart (12).

Cowboys co-captain Reuben Cotter has been cleared to play in Saturday night’s elimination final against the Sharks after successfully having his Grade 2 Careless High Tackle charge downgraded to Grade 1 at the judiciary. Cotter was facing a two-game suspension but will instead pay a $1,500 fine and take his place at lock.

Warriors forward Jackson Ford is pushing to make his first appearance in 12 weeks in Saturday’s qualifying final against the Dolphins at Go Media Stadium. Ford has been sidelined since tearing his pectoral muscle in Round 16 and was in Dally M medal contention before the injury.
