Forgiveness is the conscious decision to let go of resentment, anger, and the desire for revenge toward someone who has wronged you, freeing you from the power of the offense.

It is not the same as forgetting, excusing the behavior, or reconciliation; rather, it's a process of transforming your own feelings and attitudes to move forward in your life with more peace and less emotional burden from the past.

*What Forgiveness Is
A conscious choice: It's an intentional and voluntary act to release negative emotions, such as resentment and anger.
A process of healing: Forgiveness helps you stop dwelling on the harm done and allows you to focus on yourself and move forward with your life.
A transformation of feelings: It involves a shift from negative feelings toward the offender to a place of peace and a willingness to engage with the world without being controlled by the past.
A release: It's about releasing the emotional grip of the offense on you, freeing you from the control of the person who caused the harm.

*What Forgiveness Is Not
Forgetting: It does not mean that you forget the offense or the pain it caused.
Excusing or condoning: You don't have to pretend the offense didn't happen or that it was acceptable behavior.
Reconciliation: Forgiving does not obligate you to reconcile with the offender or return to the same relationship.
Acceptance of continued harm: It does not mean you have to accept the same harmful behaviors from the person who harmed you.

*Benefits of Forgiveness
Improved mental health: Forgiveness can elevate mood, enhance optimism, and reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and the symptoms of PTSD.
Inner peace: Letting go of grudges and bitterness can lead to greater peace of mind and allow you to focus on the present and future.
Personal empowerment: By releasing negative emotions, you are no longer controlled by the person who hurt you and can move forward in a way that empowers you.
Self-growth: Forgiveness can help you heal from trauma, recognize your own resilience, and move on with a sense of meaning and purpose.

Recently I was scrolling through instagram (probably last weekend when rushing out of bed to do things wasn’t needed) and I came across a story presented by “Nick walks Melbourne” about a Melbourne architect named Howard Lawson.

And even though I didn’t know who Howard Lawson was by name, I certainly knew about one of his well known designs High above Alexandra Avenue which is the Beverly Hills flats in South Yarra.

During the 1970s, My older sister agreed to “house sit” for a woman traveling overseas. Why I visited with family (most likely with mum and dad) I presume was curiosity to see where she was staying, that part of my memory is not so clear but it is close to 50 years ago now.

But I certainly remember my sister was house sitting for a girl called Vicki Cole, who was a buyer for Myer. And as a child this impression of what was possible in life ignited in me something new and interesting.
However, what clearly never left my memory of that day was the stairs, the architecture of the building and all the magical nooks and crannies climbing up so many stairs.

My playful imagination as a child was in full swing as I was left alone to explore. I wanted to live there from that moment on and visiting my sister there ended all too quickly.

A day in a life and then…..
Life continued back home without any changes throughout the rest of my school years. I left home and moved to the Peninsula in the late 80s and went from traveling the Hurstbridge train line to Melbourne, to traveling on the Frankston train line into town and there high on the hill, in the distance as train travels over the Yarra River towards Richmond Station I see a lost childhood memory.

“Oh wow” I thought, seeing Beverly Hills again after many years.
And no, I wasn’t working in the fashion industry and traveling the world, yet alone be a qualified architect (being an architect was something I intended to do and that’s a story for another time) but after all those years my imagination was still there and every time I’m traveling across the Yarra River I always look up at that hill.
I’m sharing this memory to share not just the photos but also a story that was posted in the comments on the original Instagram post by Nick.
I’ve included two screenshots of a fabulous fun story that was also shared on the Instagram post by “Nick walks Melbourne”, you have to read it!
Cheers Lori.
