Unpopular opinion (backed by a lot of research): under-eating might be sabotaging your fat loss, not helping it.

When calorie intake drops too low for too long, your body responds by slowing metabolic rate and breaking down muscle tissue for energy — a process called metabolic adaptation. The irony is that muscle is exactly what keeps your resting metabolism higher. Lose enough of it, and you end up burning fewer calories doing absolutely nothing, making fat loss harder, not easier, over time.

This is a huge reason why the "just eat less" approach so often stops working, especially as women move through perimenopause and menopause, when muscle is already harder to hold onto.

The better long-term strategy: eat enough to fuel your training, prioritise protein, and lift weights to build and protect muscle. It's a completely different mental model from "restrict diet" — and it tends to actually work.

Have you noticed diets getting harder to stick to (or work) as you've gotten older?

You asked, so here it is 👇

A few of you messaged after our last video asking — okay, but what does “Strong, Optimised” actually look like day to day?

Here’s the short version:

Scan — weekly body composition tracking, so we know exactly what’s changing (muscle vs. fat, not just the number on the scale)

🏋️ Train — strength sessions built around your energy that week, not smashing you into the ground

🥩 Eat — protein-first nutrition, no rigid meal plans, just making your food work harder for you

No guesswork. You get to actually see what’s happening to your body while the weight comes off.

Optimise, don’t minimise. 💪

Can we retire the phrase "I don't want to get bulky"?

It's one of the most common things we hear from new members — and it's one of the biggest myths in fitness. Building visible size takes years of deliberate training, a calorie surplus, and hormone levels most women simply don't have.

It's not something that happens by accident from a few sessions a week.

What strength training actually does: shapes and firms the muscle you already have, improves posture, strengthens your back and shoulders, and makes everyday tasks — stairs, groceries, grandkids, gardening — noticeably easier.

"Toned" isn't a different thing from muscle. It IS muscle. You can't tone what you haven't built.

If this fear has ever held you back from picking up a heavier weight, we'd love to change your mind. Come try a session with us.

Full after a few bites? Forgetting to eat because you're just... not hungry? 🤫

If your appetite has changed and the weight is coming off faster than it used to, here's something worth knowing: the scale can't tell you what you're losing. Fat, muscle, water — it all reads the same.

Muscle is the stuff that keeps your metabolism working, your joints supported, and everyday life easier. Lose too much of it, and it gets harder to keep the results you've worked for.

That's what our Strong, Optimised program is built for — strength training and protein-first nutrition coaching designed to protect your muscle while the weight comes off.

Something we hear often from women walking through our doors for the first time: "I don't feel like myself lately."

If that resonates, please hear this — it's not in your head, and you're far from alone. Hormonal shifts during perimenopause affect far more than your body; they can genuinely impact mood, self-esteem, confidence, and how you see yourself in the mirror. That's a real, physiological experience, not a personal failing.

So many women carry this quietly, assuming they should just push through or that it's "just getting older." You don't have to carry it quietly, and you don't have to figure it out alone.

If any part of this feels familiar, we'd genuinely love for you to come say hello — no pressure, no sales pitch, just a conversation and a community and coach that gets it.

Sending this to anyone who might need to hear it today. 💛

Losing weight fast right now? 👀

Here’s the question nobody asks: which weight are you actually losing?

Because there’s a difference between losing weight and getting stronger while your body changes.

That’s what Strong, Optimised is all about — training, nutrition and recovery built to help you hold onto your strength and muscle while the number on the scale moves.

Optimise the process. Don’t minimise yourself. 💪

If you've been eating and training the same way you always have and suddenly the results aren't showing up — you're not imagining it, and it's not a willpower issue.

As oestrogen and progesterone decline through perimenopause, your body becomes more insulin resistant and tends to redistribute fat storage, often toward the midsection. Cortisol sensitivity also changes, which affects how your body responds to stress and sleep deprivation. All of this means the approach that worked in your 20s and 30s often stops delivering the same results in your 40s and 50s.

The good news is there IS an approach that works well for this stage of life — it's just different. Strength training to preserve and build muscle, adequate protein, and genuinely managing stress and sleep tend to matter far more now than cutting calories further.

This is exactly the shift we help our members make. Has your body responded differently to diet and exercise in the last few years? Keen to hear if others have noticed the same thing.

🌟Meet one of our strongest members.🌟

Not because of the weight on the bar.

Because he continues to show up, challenge himself and invest in his health.

Strength training isn't about trying to look younger.

It's about maintaining independence, confidence and quality of life for as long as possible.

💪The ability to get up from the floor.
💪Carry groceries.
💪Climb stairs.
💪Travel.
💪Play with grandchildren.

These things matter.

And strength training helps you keep doing them.

Let's talk about the muscle you didn't know you were losing.

Somewhere around your late 30s, muscle mass starts quietly declining — and once perimenopause hits, that decline speeds up thanks to dropping oestrogen. It's not about willpower or "letting yourself go." It's physiology.

Here's why it matters: muscle is what keeps your metabolism humming, your joints supported, your bones strong, and lets you carry the shopping, get off the floor easily, and keep up with your kids (or grandkids) without thinking twice.
The good news? Muscle responds to training at any age. It's genuinely one of the few things you have real control over in this phase of life.

This is exactly why we built Strong Bayside around small group strength training — proper programming, real weights, and women who get exactly what you're going through.

Have you noticed changes in your strength or energy over the last few years? We'd love to hear about it in the comments. 👇
