Herbal highlight on Globe artichoke.

Typically used for digestive, gallbladder and liver support, Globe artichoke stimulates bile production and flow to aid digestion and absorption of dietary fats. Globe may support indigestion, loss of appetite and feeling sluggish.

As with any herbal medicine, the choice of herb, dose and formulation is tailored to the individual and their specific needs and we don’t recommend self-prescribing.

Apparently there’s a scenic route back to yourself.

Acupuncture has hundreds of points across the body, many with traditional names that carry their own imagery, history and meaning within Chinese Medicine.

These four make a particularly beautiful little journey:

LI4 - “Union Valley”
In Chinese Medicine tradition, this point is associated with letting go and releasing what feels stuck - tension, heaviness and what no longer serves you.

PC6 - “Inner Pass”
Associated with softening, creating space for the heart and emotions, and moving from tension toward ease.

Yin Tang - “Hall of Impression”
Associated with quiet, stillness and clarity when the mind feels busy.

Shen Men - “Spirit Gate”
A beautiful final stop. Associated with the Shen - the spirit or mind in Chinese Medicine - and ideas of inner calm, grounding and emotional balance.

I have been prescribing liquid herbal blends over several months to support a patient with luteal phase symptoms/PMS, heavy menstrual bleeding, cycle irregularity, slow bowel transit time and sluggish digestion.

These are some of the herbs we’ve used throughout her treatment.

She now reports less bloating, daily complete bowel movements and marked improvements in premenstrual fluid retention, breast tenderness, mood, cravings, brain fog, energy, anger, irritability and anxiety. Her cycle is now regular and she’s no longer experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding.

We’ve also leaned on pathology testing and nutraceuticals, and she has worked hard to implement dietary and lifestyle changes to get to where she is today.

She also hasn’t experienced a herpes flare in months and is no longer concerned about hair loss, which was one of the key reasons she initially came to see me.

It’s a great example of what can be achieved with testing, the right prescription, adjustments over time as needed, consistency and dedication.

We’re growing at The Melbourne Apothecary, and we’re looking for excellent practitioners to join us at MECCA.

We’re hiring Naturopaths and Chinese Medicine Practitioners / Acupuncturists who love what they do, love people, work beautifully in a busy environment and are excited by where natural medicine can go next.

This is an unusual place to practise.

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team bringing natural medicine to thousands of people through MECCA, working across clinical care, 24K Gold Ear Seeds, our apothecary, education, events and collaborations, while building long-term relationships with the people who discover us here.

We’re looking for practitioners with at least one year of clinical experience who are confident practising autonomously and want to be part of a team and health movement that’s making natural medicine more convenient, accessible and visible.

Paid employment roles, 2-3+ days per week.

We love extending feel good care beyond The Melbourne Apothecary clinic and out into the world.

You’ll find us popping up at brand events, hotels, corporate gatherings and collaborations around Melbourne with 24K gold ear seeds, breathwork, or a beautiful combination of both.

For events, we do a speedy 3–5 minute version of our ear seed treatments, themed around things like calm, creativity, focus or uplift. We secretly and affectionately call them “party seeds”…everyone gets seeded, then heads back out into the event with a little constellation of gold on their ears.

This recent Clinique x MECCA evening paired party seeds for calm with Gua Sha and skincare, followed by immersive breathwork with our co-founder Carly Woods. A lovely example of the kinds of collabs we get to bring to life.

Its name translates roughly to “Spirit Gate”, which is already quite a beautiful introduction.

Shen Men is a point our Chinese medicine practitioners may consider when someone comes in feeling overwhelmed, restless or finding it hard to settle at night, and Emily Borozan, Chinese medicine practitioner and acupuncturist, says it would be very high on her list if she had to choose a favourite.

Of course, the beauty of an ear seed treatment is that our practitioners aren’t choosing one famous point and sending everyone home with the same ears. Your constellation of 24K gold ear seeds is selected for you, based on what you’d like support with and how you’re presenting on the day.

However we do love finding out which points our practitioners have a soft spot for.
