🤸‍♀️ SKILL OF THE WEEK - Long Swings

Long Swings are one of the most important foundation skills on the Uneven Bars.
They are the building blocks for almost all high bar swinging skills and help gymnasts develop the technique, strength, and confidence needed to progress on the bars.

In the early levels, our gymnasts focus on learning the correct body shapes, developing strength and body tension, and building the timing and confidence required to swing effectively. These fundamental skills create a strong foundation for future bar success!

Why Long Swings are important:
🤸‍♀️ Develop upper body and core strength
🤸‍♀️ Teach correct swinging technique
🤸‍♀️ Build body tension and control
🤸‍♀️ Improve timing and coordination
🤸‍♀️ Increase confidence on the bars

Most excitingly, mastering long swings can lead to more advanced skills in the future, including the spectacular giant swing!
Every great bar gymnast starts with the fundamentals, and long swings are a key part of that journey. Keep up the great work, gymnasts!

🤸‍♀️ SKILL OF THE WEEK - Upper Body Strength 🤸‍♀️

When most people think of gymnastics, they think of incredible upper body strength.
From hanging on the bars in our Mercury and Venus classes to performing chin-ups and even assisted muscle-ups in our school-aged programs, gymnasts at every level develop strength through fun, challenging, and age-appropriate activities.

At GLXY Gymnastics, our qualified coaches create engaging circuits and exercises that help participants build the strength needed to support their gymnastics journey while having plenty of fun along the way!

Why Upper Body Strength is Important:
🤸‍♀️ Builds confidence on bars and other apparatus
🤸‍♀️ Develops strong arms, shoulders, and back muscles
🤸‍♀️ Improves body control and stability
🤸‍♀️ Supports progression to more advanced gymnastics skills
🤸‍♀️ Encourages overall strength and fitness

Whether it's a first hang on the bar or mastering a new strength challenge, every activity helps our gymnasts grow stronger, one step at a time!

🤸‍♀️ SKILL OF THE WEEK - Forward Roll 🤸‍♀️

School is back, a brand-new term has begun and so has our Skill of the Week series!
The forward roll is one of the very first rotation skills taught in gymnastics. In fact, we begin introducing this skill to some of our youngest gymnasts from as young as 12 months old in our Mercury classes!
Not only are forward rolls lots of fun, but they also provide a range of developmental benefits and help build the foundations for future gymnastics success.

Why forward rolls are so important:
🤸‍♀️ Develop core strength and body control
🤸‍♀️ Improve balance and coordination
🤸‍♀️ Build spatial awareness and understanding of rotation
🤸‍♀️ Boost confidence as gymnasts master a new skill
🤸‍♀️ Create the foundation for more advanced gymnastics movements

While the forward roll may seem like a basic skill, it is the starting point for many advanced techniques, including front saltos, vaults, beam and bar dismounts, and even helps prepare gymnasts for backward tumbling by developing the feeling of rotating and moving through space.
Every great gymnast starts with the fundamentals, and the forward roll is one of the most important first steps on that journey!

🤸‍♀️ SKILL OF THE WEEK - Handstands 🤸‍♀️

Handstands are a gymnast’s bread and butter - a true foundation skill used from our Kinder Gym classes all the way through to elite international competition 🤸‍♀️

This week, our focus is on building the strength needed for strong, controlled handstands. It’s not just about being upside down - it’s about developing strength, stability, and body control from head to toe!

In action this week:
Coach Louise is demonstrating a fantastic drill on the A‑Frame ladder, stepping her feet up one rung at a time while holding a front support shape at different angles. This helps build strength progressively and safely.

What this activity develops:
🤸‍♀️ Core strength for body control
🤸‍♀️ Shoulder strength for stability
🤸‍♀️ Wrist strength for support
🤸‍♀️ Even finger strength for balance and control

Why it matters:
🤸‍♀️ Builds strong foundations for all handstand skills
🤸‍♀️ Improves balance and body awareness
🤸‍♀️ Supports progression to more advanced movements

Strong handstands start with smart training - great work, gymnasts!

🤸‍♀️SKILL OF THE WEEK - Walking (beam)🤸‍♀️

Walking on the beam might look like a simple skill, but it’s actually an important foundation for strong and confident beam work 🤸‍♀️

At GLXY Gymnastics, we focus on building great technique from the very beginning - even in skills as basic as walking! Every step on the beam helps develop control, confidence, and body awareness.

What we focus on when walking on the beam:
🤸‍♀️ Torso control and upright posture
🤸‍♀️ Strong body alignment
🤸‍♀️ Gripping the beam with the toes for stability
🤸‍♀️ Walking on tip toes for balance and control

Why it matters:
🤸‍♀️ Builds confidence on the beam
🤸‍♀️ Develops balance and coordination
🤸‍♀️ Teaches strong technical foundations
🤸‍♀️ Prepares gymnasts for more advanced skills

It’s not just walking - it’s the start of becoming strong, stable, and confident on the beam!
