Altra Athlete Spotlight - Mat Grills

From completing 10x 50km runs and 40x marathons in 50 consecutive days! To doing the Leadville 100miler in 2019, winning the inaugural Buffalo Grand Slam and of course making plenty of lifelong memories running with his mates such as when they finished Coast to Kosci in a “biblical electrical storm.”
Mat shares his thoughts on the importance of taking your time and enjoying this lifelong process. 🙌

Favourite Shoe? 👟

“Always the Lone Peak. I have run 10’s of thousands of k’s in many different iterations, I think I may have even had as early as the Lone Peak 2’s? Just an all round immense shoe for all terrains.”

Best tip for new runners? 👀

“BE PATIENT! Build slowly, take your time...running isn’t going anywhere! Beyond everything, be consistent. Consistency is key to success in anything in life, particularly running! There are no hacks. There are no shortcuts.”

Favourite Fuel? 🍩

• Post run meal - “A vegan burger is always good....smoothie bowl....ramen?”
• Aid station snack - “The basics. Watermelon, potato chips, coke later in a race. I was bonking hard in a 100miler once and this aid station had some home made peanut brittle....I took a bag of it and that stuff saved my race! So so good!”

• 1st Place Female - Light Horse 24hr Ultra, 191km.
• 1st Place Female - Sydreh’s Back2Frontyard Ultra, 216km.
• 3rd Place Female - UP Ultra, 50km.

Why Altra? 🏃‍♂️

“I was always worried to go to zero drop but was constantly hearing about all the benefits and amazing reviews so I took the leap and I couldn’t be more thankful. It changed my form, increased my speed, increased my ankle strength, I no longer have issues with my feet and toes and the wide toe box allows for all the swelling involved in ultras. Not only that but I was constantly frustrated with brands durability being terrible and I am yet to outrun a pair of Altras, their durability is unmatched.”

Favourite Shoe? 👟

Road:
Vanish Carbon - “An extremely light and fast road shoe that has helped me hit all my PB’s.”

Trail:
Mont Blanc Carbon - “Amazing traction and speed. Great for technical single track trails with the bonus of being lightweight and having some carbon to add speed.”

Your best tip for new runners? 🔥

“Stop thinking about pace and start listening to your body, enjoy the run. Everyone gets caught up on pace and constantly looking at their watch. But once you get out there into nature, slow down and take in what your body is allowing you to do and everything will fall into place, and you’ll truly find the beauty of what running is.”

Tasmania showed its truest form last weekend for the launch of the Experience Wild 3+. 🍃

Overcast skies. Rain-soaked forest. Trails running wet, muddy and technical from the first step to the last.

Blue Derby delivered everything Tasmania is known for - steep climbs, fast descents and forest trails that never quite dry. As the descents got steeper, led a downhill technique session right where it matters most: On real terrain, at real speed. ⛰️

Mud, roots and slick rock.

Real conditions.
Real performance.

WILD SESSION // TASMANIA 🌿

To launch the new Experience Wild 3+, we brought together 10 of Tasmania’s strongest trail
runners and dropped them straight into the deep end at Blue Derby ⛰

Steep climbs. Steeper descents. Forest floor, bush bash, dirt, slick rock slabs and tunnels
carved through the mountains. Tasmania showed up in its truest form - raw, technical and
unapologetically wild. The session more than lived up to its name.

Nights spent deep in the trees at . Mornings chasing new lines. Descents
that demand full focus and commitment - exactly the kind of terrain this shoe was built for.

Good people.
Technical trails.
Wild miles.

We can’t wait for more.
