WINTER SUP CLOTHING TIPS!
AND
What’s ahead for our
2026/2027 SUP LESSONS!

❄️With winter approaching, its a great time of year to add a few layers to your SUP kit…

❄️While instructing SUP lessons, we often get asked…
“What type of clothing is appropriate to wear in WINTER while STANDUP PADDLE BOARDING in 📍Melbourne Victoria Australia.

❄️ Kitting up in the right gear always makes a SUP experience much more enjoyable, especially in winter!

❄️So here are a few suggestions on what to wear while STANDUP PADDLE BOARDING during the winter months in📍Melbourne Victoria Australia 🇦🇺.

❄️While the feet and legs normally only need one piece of clothing, the top half of the body loves a bit of layering. Long sleeve, light weight, wind and water resistance.

❄️It helps to be able to peel off the layers, wrapping the long sleeves around your waist as your body begins to warm up with movement.

❄️TIP:
You can’t go past purchasing quality clothing while on the water. You definitely don’t want clothing that absorbs water which in turn can weigh you down! 💦
It needs to be water resistant and fast drying!

❄️Starting at the….

1. FEET: 👣
Booties.
A pair that cover your ankles are ideal.

2. LEGS: 🦵
Leggings that are fleece lined and water resistant are ideal or depending on the time of day you are paddling and the wind temperature, wearing regular sports leggings can still work.

3. UPPER BODY:🎽
Here is where you can layer up.
*Short sleeve thermal vest.
*Long sleeve thermal rash vest.
*Long sleeve, light weight wind jacket or spray jacket.

4. HANDS:🧤🧤
Gloves - Water resistant.
Thick enough to keep your hands warm, but thin enough so you can still feel your paddle.

5.HEAD: 🧢
Beanie/cap.

6. WETSUIT: 💦💧🌊
If you find yourself taking a dip often, then a wetsuit can come in very handy! But if you are a competent paddler, the body can get warm/hot very quickly in a wetsuit.
If you have never paddled in a wetsuit over winter, try going for a short fast paddle in one and see how your body feels. If you feel you are starting to sweat or overheat, try just a wetsuit top and a pair of leggings instead.

7. HI VISUAL:🎽
Keep everything as HI VIS as you can. You want to be seen on the water at all times by others.

8. POST PADDLE.🔥
If you are a good distance from home, it’s always nice to peel off your SUP gear and slide your body into some warm comfortable clothing to drive home in.

🔥Nothing beats a pair of warm trackie pants after a paddle, along with a super comfortable hoodie and/or jacket.

🔥Having a flask of WARM water to pour over your feet after your paddle certainly warms them up quickly for the drive home!
If you own a pair of UGG boots, these are like GOLD to slide your feet into.

👍Hoping this has given you some ideas/tips on what to wear during the winter months while paddling in 📍Melbourne Victoria Australia! 🇦🇺

✅If you have any further tips we haven’t mentioned feel free to share them in the comments.

✅ Its all about supporting one another while on the water 👍

‼️NOTE: 👍👍

We are taking a break…🌊

What a blast we’ve had with our SUP lessons throughout our 2025/2026 season! 🌊

We normally run our SUP lessons right through winter, but this year we’ll be taking a 3-month break, starting today through to the end of July. We’ll be back refreshed and ready to kick off our 2026/2027 SUP season in mid-August.

A big thank you to everyone who joined our SUP lessons, including all the members of the SUP Melbourne Club who took part in our recent SUP Skill Sessions—your energy and support made it such a fantastic season!

Don’t stop paddling over winter—Melbourne can still put on some amazing sunny days with calm winds. It’s all about layering up and wearing the right gear.

Stay tuned for our next post, where we’ll share detailed tips on what to wear while paddling during winter if you’re unsure.

Happy paddling, and we hope to see you out on the water!

Building your confidence on the water is what we aim to achieve during our SUP lessons.

We take it slowly, so it’s all done in a step by step process.
No rushing trying to get you to stand up straight away. All in your time - not ours.

Well done to Ali this morning as we built on technique and skill. 👏🏼

Looking forward to seeing more progress as we take to the water next time.

Thank you to all the members for taking part in the Skills Session which took place Sunday at Sandridge Beach Melbourne Vic.

Always a pleasure guiding the paddlers during these sessions on the water, helping them improve their skills and technique. During this session a paddle towards Port Melbourne pier taking in the sights added to the morning’s event.

Thank you to all the support crew who were on hand, along with Di ( Event organiser) & Tim Brosnan (Club President ).

Always finishing off with a coffee and a chat at one of Melbourne’s many groovy cafes 😋☕️

If you haven’t joined SUP Melbourne for one of their social paddles, they hold them for both members and non members.
Check out their FB page as this is where they post up and coming events.
Whether you are a beginner or intermediate paddler they have GROUP paddles for both levels.

Hoping all who attended Sunday’s Skills Session took away the skills needed to improve their technique.

Setting our sights on paddling to Elwood for our SUP lesson, these 2 best friends were participating in their 3rd lesson hoping to see some sea life.
Never had they seen Dolphins, Penguins or Sting rays and we got the lot!!!

The conditions were mint as they achieved their first 5km paddle! 👏🏼👏🏼

Sooo good to have you back ladies!

18/4/26 - SUP Lesson

Absolutely nothing was a problem for Cathy during her progression session SUP lesson this morning.
Super keen to jump out of her comfort zone and progress even further.
The conditions this morning were perfect with some great bumps coming through for her to learn the skill of gliding.

Great work Cathy 👍👏🏼👍

18/4/26…SUP lesson.

Our first duo SUP lesson this morning had our participants picking up the skills of paddling into small bumps and then catching them, gliding back towards the beach.
Once you paddle a little outside your comfort zone, guided within one of our lessons, you’ll find your skills remarkably improve and your confidence sore. Your next paddle on calm waters will be a breeze!!

Well done ladies 👍👍

18/4/26… SUP Lesson🐢🐢🐢

During today’s third SUP lesson we just couldn’t get enough photos of the art work on Rachael’s SUP board!

So reminded me of the sunblime sea life and ocean of the stunning Ningaloo reef far north of Perth WA.
You can’t but smile when you see such a colourful board 😁

Thank you for booking your lesson with us Racheal. You were amazing on the water wanting to build your confidence and paddle skills. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Looking forward to seeing you during your next Progression Session.
