President Geoff Collinson O.A.M together with the committee, life members and current and past players would like to acknowledge the recent passing of Life Member Bruce Neate.
Bruce joined the club in the early 1950s following it’s admission to the then District Cricket Competition. He made his 1st XI debut as a 19 year old on the 29th November 1952 against Carlton. Bruce was awarded Cap Number 40.
Bruce went onto play 48 matches in the seniors for the Bulldogs, scoring 691 runs at 13.04 and taking 1 wicket at an average of 19. He also spent a number of seasons captaining the 2nd XI.
Following Bruce’s career at Footscray he joined the VCA Umpires’ Association during the 1968-69 Season. There he was awarded 1Ist XI umpire hat 209 and went on to umpire 42 1st XI matches.
Following his retirement from umpiring he returned to Footscray in 1975 and joined the committee as treasurer and VCA delegate until the end of the 1985 Season.
Together with Jim Mann, Bruce was instrumental in the smooth running of the club which ultimately led to the club securing it’s first 1st XI Premiership and two 2nd XI Premierships during this time.
For his services to the Footscray Cricket Club and to Cricket Victoria both organisations saw fit to award Bruce with life membership.
The club wishes to extend its sympathies to Bruce’s surviving family members.
