THE REALITIES OF LOVE AND DEATH IN THE AGE OF CORONA

Getting married and buried these days has taken a big byte out of modern communications technology.

I am a registered Commonwealth Civil Celebrant, so I am acutely aware of the rules and realities for performing weddings and funerals under the reign of Covid-19. Celebrants are duty bound to uphold the rule of law.

Weddings are supposed to be limited to five attendees, which is actually the legal minimum for getting married in Australia (five is the legal minimum, but what about the parents?) Funerals are supposed to be limited to ten, not counting the person of note.

Just in the last week, I performed a wedding with nine people standing 2 meters apart in a backyard, but this was streamed all over Australia on a variety of apps to over 100 cheering people.

This wedding was also notable because I had only 48 hours to organise it and obtain permission from the local magistrate to waive the 30-day waiting period as the bride was close to death.

I then attended a funeral via the internet that was witnessed by hundreds of friends and family all over the world and is available for download. It was incredibly well done and very moving.

While funerals in Australia do not require a registered Celebrant, it is still part of our training and ongoing professional development.

The Mayor of New York has just decreed that couples can marry via Zoom, an internet video conferencing app. This takes us back to the heady days of proxy weddings, where the bride and groom could be half a world away.

The realities are that Love and Death in the Age of Corona could bring more people together for weddings and funerals without any breech of social distancing. No travel, no accommodation and relatively stress free.

So, the message is … don’t delay getting married until Corona dies down. You’re not limited to five people in one place. Beam the funeral live around the world. Embrace the Age Of Corona.

I am happy to correspond with anyone who has questions in these matters. It is part of our registration with the Attorney-General that we avail ourselves to anyone who requires help, without obligation.

Send me a private message and I will be happy to respond.
