I have favourites. FACT

Every teacher does. FACT.

And NOPE.

It is NOT the most gifted, flexible and talented dancer.
NUP!

It is the dancer who listens, nods and echoes back what the teacher says.
It is the dancer who smiles at others.
Who welcomes an outsider into their circle.
Celebrates every tiny achievement.
Lifts the spirit of their classmates with their focus, perseverance and positive energy.

Now..
Try and disagree with that!

Check yourself before you wreck yourself 🫶
Jealousy dulls your light as a dancer 🫪
It slows you down, makes people not comfortable to be around you- making a dance class a very unhappy place for everyone.
Don’t be that person who has to make up a story of why you didn’t win, why you weren’t chosen or why someone else has more than you.
BE the person who smiles for someone else. Who celebrates WHEN you do achieve but in the next second, claps when you don’t place!
Being jealous is normal and natural BUT how you decide to act when you feel it makes a big difference.
What story are you pretending to believe in your head?
Notice the difference in the people around you when you lean towards kindness. ♥️
LOVE LOVE LOVE both little nod of approval and sheer joy of achievement. It then switched over two seconds later!

Dance teacher RANTS and PREACHING 😡

A quick pop-in to my local bookstore between tours and I spotted this book: Angertainment.

It confirmed everything I’ve been suspecting about dance and social media.

👉 TikTok is becoming TraumaTok.
👉 My Instagram explore page is filled with teachers sitting in cars talking about other teachers.

You can literally say ANYTHING on social media.

The more negative, the more contentious = more views, more comments, more followers.

If you want to go viral, make up a story and pretend you have good intentions.

This is incredibly damaging.

The worst part is when people use the VERY important topics of SAFE DANCE and CHILD SAFEGUARDING as hooks to get views.

Is it okay to preach about not overstretching… and then a year later, after the accolades fade and the topic isn’t as “hot,” overstretch your dancers in the exact same way you once preached that you would never do?

Child safety should NEVER be used for views.
It should NEVER be used for gossip.

This is how so much damage is done — manipulative predators rely on gossip, confusion, distortion, and people assuming “that could never happen in my world.”

Don’t make the mistake of being naive — or worse, feeling so superior that you think those monsters could never exist around you.

This is a serious topic we should be discussing every single day.
More on this very soon in an Australian podcast I’ll be interviewed on.

There is SO MUCH anger in the world right now.

Why are we, as a community, so drawn to gossip?

I sometimes wonder if dance teachers are so exhausted, overworked, and emotionally drained that seeing someone else get “cancelled” gives a strange sense of relief.
Like, “At least it’s not me today.”

Is it jealousy? Insecurity?
Or is it something I used to cover with my year 7 kids in my history teaching days— a throwback to gladiator times, where societies overwhelmed by struggle turned public humiliation into entertainment?

It honestly baffles me.

Every dance teacher I know has had rumours spread about them.
A private conversation retold in a completely distorted way.
Words twisted. The narrative completely rewritten.

And the frightening part is:
it often doesn’t matter how calmly you present facts, evidence, or logic. Or how much you gave your heart and soul to benefit the dancer-

GOSSIP WINS.
Because outrage spreads faster than truth.

I’ve also noticed that the loudest voices are often the most uneducated OR the people wanting the spotlight.

The trend of our kids winning with pained, agonised, angry expressions in lyrical routines…
teachers building platforms through outrage…
social media rewarding conflict and ranting,

It all reflects the same thing.

Our dance community has also become ANGERTAINMENT with politics, gossip, and survival.

“Shoulders down! I said SHOULDERS DOWN!”
I remember teachers barking at my class but not giving us any support. Young girls and teenagers need extra education about how to build strength in their upper bodies as they grow and although it is slowly changing, anything to do with women comes last. It’s time to change that! 🫶
We had the best time at _ thanks to .techniqueintensives trying to understand why we lift up in the shoulders and neck and discovering how it impacts on our turns.

“Radar Technique is everywhere”
So this is an honour for me to hear and I never get tired of hearing it BUT…. what I really can’t cope with is people teaching my drills incorrectly.
This is where that ego I spoke about in my previous post shows up. What would you do if someone was filming tutorials demonstrating your drills but was teaching it incorrectly?
Help! My FYP is filled with it.
I’m even MORE grateful in these moments for the teachers around the world who are connected to me as we continue to grow, challenge and motivate each other to be better and do better for our dancers.
