Nilakshi Guruge holds a Special Honours Degree in Visual and Performing Arts from the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Sri Lanka. Her journey in Kandyan dancing began at the age of 10 at Thiththapajjala Deshiya Kalayathanaya (තිත්තපජ්ජල දේශීය කලායතනය) under the guidance of renowned brothers Sumanaweera and Samaraweera, sons of the legendary Suramba Gurunnanse (සුරඹා ගුරුන්නාන්සේ).
A gifted dancer from the start, Nilakshi achieved the honour of wearing the traditional Shirshabharana (ශීර්ෂාභරණ) at a remarkably young age — a milestone reserved for those who master the art with exceptional skill and dedication.
After graduating with her Special Honours Degree, she served as a government school teacher in Sri Lanka, where she introduced the art of Kandyan dancing to young students. Known for her patient guidance, vibrant teaching style, and deep cultural knowledge, she inspired many children to embrace the tradition with pride and joy.
In 2018, Nilakshi moved to Melbourne, Australia, bringing with her a lifelong passion for Kandyan dance and a commitment to sharing Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage with the next generation.
